Traditional China and old practices are unveiled in this poignant tale.
"The Shanghai Circle" by Tony Henderson highlights the prevalent Chinese traditional practice of 1936 when the Triads were in power, dealing drugs, running clubs, and making money from prostitutes. The author captured the sad reality of women not holding authoritative positions in traditional China.
No offense to the author, but since I can't stomach rape, violent scenes, and descriptive inhumanity, I will pass reading this book.

Though I found the title interesting and catchy, the review failed to impress me. I found the characters quite dominating. There is a greed for power and succession, and from the review, it is quite clear that the entire story revolves around the theme of the acquisition of power, which is usually not my liking. I will give it a pass.

I wonder what Joseph's regime would be like after succeeding his father in the Triad, and this book has an intriguing plot.

The review of "The Shanghai Circle" by Tony Henderson is well written and detailed,it makes the decision to read or not read the entire book very easy to make . The story line is set in historical china and reads like a thriller, because the book contains some tough subjects like rape, violence ,ill treatment of women etc,I don't think I will be quick to read it but greatly appreciate the review.

I was about to place this book on my "want to read" shelve, but after reading the description provided in the review, I had to reconsider because "dealing drugs, running clubs, and making money from prostitutes" aren't the topics I enjoy exploring. Sorry and congrats with BOTD!

I appreciate the focus the review has on the cultural perspective of the book. To enter such a distant reality is both refreshing and scary. That is the power of books: a gruesome reality is experienced vicariously through the ink of paper while comfortable and safe within the walls of our home.

From what I know about the Chinese Triad, they never forgive nor forget. Once they hold a grudge, they can pass that grudge down till any generation sees opportunity to fulfill the vendetta. I'm wondering how the Guests can handle this.

Nice review! I'm really not into historical writings, nor ones that involve war. The Japanese and Chinese hate each other. I witnessed that when I lived in Japan for two years. I think that I will pass on this one, though.

I love this historical book taking place in China. Anyone who loves learning about real-life Chinese history would enjoy being transported in time to the 1930s. Immerse yourself in this exciting reading journey and learn about life in the 1930s in this Asian country.

There's something about a thriller set in the historical past that's much more enjoyable than some unfolding in modern times. Those with a good sense of word history should eat this one up. Congrats to the author on his achievement and BOTD.

Fantastic review! You captured so much of what I loved about The Shanghai Circle too. The way the author brings out the tension between tradition and survival, especially through characters like Davina and Irina, really pulled me in. The historical backdrop of Shanghai in the 1930s was gripping, and I found the blend of real-life events with the personal drama so well done. I also couldn’t put it down and appreciated learning about Chinese history through the story. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Definitely not the kind of book i would go for but it does peak my interest a little. The review shows lots of conflict happening and I could see myself reading it just for the curiosity I have about the culture in those times.

I read this book a long while ago, and I enjoyed it. It was first time reading a book that was set in China, and when the country wasn't stable at all. To learn about the pending Japan invasion, and people migrating for their safety was very scary to witness. I loved how the author used vivid descriptions to make sure that the scenes come alive and be memorable in reader's mind. Charles's relationship with his daughter was indeed inspiring. Great review and congratulations to the author for BOTD!
