Besides the obvious themes of resilience and compassion, I think the author was also addressing the repercussions of child neglect. Even though the setting of this tale is in South Africa, I see similar situations in the USA as well. Our over-worked social workers cannot keep up with all the children who are being neglected by their parents.

The positive aspect that stood out for me is the fact that the abused group was resilient, did not give up, and maintained a positive approach toward all the challenges in the form of persons or situations they faced.

Themes that jump out at me from this book are: life isn't fair, necessity is the mother of invention, and that great minds think alike while fools seldom differ. These kids learned early in their lives that life wasn't fair. In order to survive they had to be inventive and resourceful. These kids had great minds while the ruling adults were fools.
