ARA Review by Chaotic_Reading of No Rest for the Innocent

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The following is a review for No Rest for the Innocent. Francesca finds herself very confused when she wakes up after what could possibly be considered the worst day of her life. From there she begins work toward unwinding the threads that got her murdered in the first place.

Despite being the lead character, Frankie drove me nuts, but honestly, not as much as “the pink thing.” The nicknames Frankie came up with throughout the entire book were fantastic, but I had a hard time with her wishy-washy-back-and-forth behavior. Sometimes, she was the prim and proper daughter of a wealthy count, other times I felt like she was reacting like a fifteen year old child throwing a temper-tantrum despite being 20 years old. Soren was hard to get a read on, especially through Frankie’s eyes, and I really hope he is just pretending that he doesn’t know who she is by the end of the book. There are too many clues over the course of the book for Soren to look at her and simply go, “yeah, there is no way you are my dead wife. I don’t buy it.” Especially when she showed the pink thing who she really was toward the end of the book. Maybe that will be explained in the next book?

One thing that struck me as odd, though not unenjoyable, were the chapter titles. They were very appropriate to the plot of the chapters, but were just bizarre. As were the “sub-chapters.” I have never seen that before, and it was a little weird to get used to.

The Frankenstein references throughout the book were great. The world is intriguing and creative, and I soaked up every little bit of lore and backstory that there was concerning the world. The cliffhanger at the end was well put together, but I’m not sure if I would read the next book or not. The craziness of the constant and weird use of capital letters throughout the story made some sentences very hard to read.

Overall, I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because I liked the fresh idea of an undead vigilante focused on the destruction of those who wronged her.
