Ellipses spacing + page number in quotation marks

Post by Esther-David »

Hello! I was just wondering if there are any guidelines on ellipses spacing to follow? For context, the ellipses is removing a long, non-essential phrase from a quote from a book. Like "He went into the garden...and returned with a handful of carrots" (52). I was dinged on not having a space after the final period in the ellipses, which makes no sense to me. From here (https://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/ellipses.asp), it seems that either it's spaces before, between, and after each period, or spaces just before and after. I am so confused on this.

In addition, I was dinged for having the parenthetical page number outside the quotation mark. This doesn't make any sense to me either, as the page number is not part of the book. Are there rules I'm missing?
