Review of The Screwtape Texts
Are you a Christian who wonders where temptations come from? Have you ever considered the role of demons in drawing you away from God and spending your eternity with him in Heaven? Do you seek reflection materials to accompany you on your journey to grow in the Christian life and meditate on ways that God may be calling you to grow in holiness? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should read The Screwtape Texts: A Devil’s Dialogue with His Tempter in Training by Deacon Timothy Stevenson.
Stevenson has created a modern adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters by translating the letters into a text message format. In addition to these translations, he provides prayer resources, encouragement, and reflection or discussion questions at the end of each chapter. This modern adaptation makes C. S. Lewis’ classic text more accessible to modern readers. The material that Stevenson added at the end of each chapter provides an invaluable resource by indicating means of combating the temptations presented in each chapter. Reflection questions provide great food for thought for anyone who desires to examine their own life and assess how they can grow in the spiritual life. These questions would also be helpful in facilitating discussion for anyone who would like to read and discuss this book with a close friend or group of friends.
Overall I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, as I found nothing to dislike about it. As someone who has read the original text by C. S. Lewis, I believe that Stevenson’s adaptation is quite true to the source. In my reading I noted a few minor grammar issues, but they did not detract from the reading experience. Some of the suggested prayers and reference materials included in this book are particular to the Catholic faith tradition, but I believe that Christians of most denominations would benefit from reading this book.

I was brought up a Catholic. Because of that and my quest to be more spiritual, your review has piqued my interest in this book. I am curious enough to read it. Great review!Julie Basil wrote: ↑19 Dec 2024, 22:33 [Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Screwtape Texts" by Timothy Stevenson.]

Wow, this has quite a provocative title and cover imagery! I have enjoyed reading a little of C.S. Lewis. I continue telling myself that I will read more of his content. Perhaps I should check this book out in addition to The Screwtape Letters! This sounds like a good read for Christian audiences. I am a big fan of C.S. Lewis both for his fiction and nonfiction writings. In addition to The Screwtape Letters, I have also enjoyed his Chronicles of Narnia Series, A Grief Observed, Mere Christianity, The Weight of Glory, Surprised by Love, The Four Loves, and The Great Divorce.Adrian Bouknight wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 17:01Wow, this has quite a provocative title and cover imagery!
