Review of Sock Sloth and the Lunar Blades
Sock Sloth and the Lunar Blades by J W B Rowley is a fictional children’s novel full of creative characters and tonnes of adventure. The book is suitable for readers aged 7-10.
Sock sloth is different from other sloths as he wears red and white striped socks and has super speed. He proudly co-owns the Suoer Awesome Dudes Crime Fighting Agency with his best friend, Rick the Panda. Rick’s main passion is bamboo, and he loves to spend the day eating this most delicious snack. One September morning, the phone rings. Rick answers to a woman desperately seeking help to recover the stolen Lunar Blades. Wacky Bottomsmirk, a walrus with a cybernetic bodysuit, and his army of iguanas have attacked the Chillbone Maze and the Blade Keeper, Tibono, to take the sacred Japanese swords and harness their power for evil. Sock Sloth and Rick set out on a dangerous mission to stop Wacky and endeavour to keep their city of Aridonia safe from the sword-wielding walrus.
This story has imaginative and appealing animal characters. I loved their quirkiness and originality. The author has added humour to the characters by exploiting their characteristics. I loved Sock Sloth and Rick as they are a dynamic duo who are determined, hard-working, and the best of friends. The book provides constant action, making this story exciting for young readers with no loss of momentum. The writing is creative and a joy to read. Young readers will find it hard to put down and will enjoy the roller coaster ride of adventure.
The most surprising thing about this book is that the author is only 9 years old. I think this novel is an accomplishment. The creative writing, storytelling, and imagination the young author displays are incredible, and I think he will have a bright future as a writer. I loved to read that the author found inspiration at Edinburgh Zoo, observing his favourite animals.
I particularly enjoyed the description of Aridonia, its surrounding deserts, Mount Mammoth, and the Chillbone Maze. The author has described quite a vision of a magical world, along with its history and accounts of the Lunar King and the Demon King. The backstory is intriguing and lays a foundation for entertaining plotlines. The conclusion of the book also allows for further instalments. I think the two crime fighters could entertain with many more magical adventures.
I loved this story and the fun characters. I liked that it is a fast-paced book, full of adventure and action. I enjoyed the great descriptions of landscapes and frightening episodes of extreme nature, such as volcanos, lightning, and meteor showers. The addition of humour in the characters is fantastic. The book is professionally edited, but there is a mistake throughout the book. A character’s name is spelt incorrectly numerous times. Because of the error, I am unable to give a perfect score. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.
