1. What do you do when you aren't writing?
I am an advocate for seniors and those who need support and encouragement: I am an avid gardener and have my Zen moments with my plants. I also attend Senior Water Aerobics 4 times a week. I believe in a healthy, active lifestyle as we age. I am also an artist and enjoy cartooning. I try to remain active in any way that engages me, and I seek any opportunity to keep involved.
2. Who has been inspirational in your life?
I am very patriotic, and I am inspired by the heart, courage and grit of our military and those who have served. I also worked with the deaf and physically disabled for many years. I am inspired by those who go beyond what others expect of them. The infectious smile of a Downe Syndrome child, or a teenager with a spinal cord injury from a car accident playing wheelchair basketball, or a young deaf person signing (using sign language) to the music of her favorite song is inspiring to me.
3. Let's discuss your book Chair Yoga for Seniors. What's the purpose of the book?
To encourage seniors to take care of themselves in ways that are accommodating to their condition, whether it be post-surgery, struggling with weight loss, balance or mobility, or conditions like arthritis that affect their lifestyle. To be the best they can be.
4. Why did you decide to write this book?
In my water aerobics class, I meet many seniors that are struggling with health issues, who are physically slowing down and not able to keep up with what they want to do. I want them to see this book as encouragement and a beginning of fighting back the physical stressors of aging. I also want them to know they have a legacy that is worthy of leaving to those behind, no matter what they did in life.
5. Who is your target audience?
Anyone whose body isn't as capable as it once was. Seniors who have retired and are slowing down actively; those who are facing retirement and feel life will change drastically for them if they cannot keep up. Also, anyone who faced surgery and now has a period of convalescing and needs to become strong and active again through physical therapy and all of the above who need encouragement and healthy life tips to regain what they may have lost or help keep the stamina they now have.
6. Which pose is your favorite from the book?
I like any of the stretching poses, and there are several. Whether stretching our arm above our head (seated side arm reaches or neck stretch) or twisting and stretching our bodies with the seated twist or seated forward bend with a twist, they have an instant feeling of relief for me and hopefully for others.
7. Tell us about the illustrations.
I couldn't find an illustrator and didn't want to use AI-generated images. I illustrated the book myself. I am an artist and cartoonist and although I've been retired from any serious work, it was fun to draw the 80-plus illustrations.
8. What's next for you?
I'd like to continue encouraging writings for seniors and advocate for them. I'd also like to do a coloring book to release my artistic energies.
I like to end with fun questions.
9. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Banana Yogurt
10. What celebrity do you most look like?
I have no idea. Maybe Betty White.
11. What is a food combination people eat that you just can't get behind? (For example, dipping french fries in Frosties.)
Ketchup on mashed potatoes!
12. What is one thing you'll never do again?
Cook a turkey dinner!
