David’s Space Flight - Waking Up by Sharron L. Hillman-Dwyer is an educational children’s story. The book is suitable for children aged 6-9 who enjoy interactive learning experiences.

David’s school friend wakes him as he has fallen asleep in class. His friend, Julia, tells him that they have picked Venus out of a hat and that they must research five facts about the planet and present them to the teacher and students the following day. David studies a textbook and suggests ideas for the presentation, but Julia thinks his ideas are boring because he has been sleeping. With some encouragement and an understanding of the real reason David fell asleep, the pair decide on an entertaining presentation to encourage debate.

The book has bright and colourful illustrations that depict the story. The drawings fill whole pages and make the book a graphic novel. Children will find this style appealing and can find extra insight in the pictures. Interestingly, you never see David from the front, so children need to use their imagination as to what he looks like. The text is in speech bubbles, creating a fun comic-book appeal.

The book is in two parts, the first being the story and the second an interactive and educational section. The story is not overly exciting, but the interactive part is excellent. After the story, there is a word search and several extension activities. These activities cover a variety of subjects and encourage understanding of the story. The tasks require self-directed research and learning and help develop necessary skills.

I particularly liked that the book included instructions on how to make a volcano. Although the story is short, the activities a child can do through the extension activities would fill a lot of time. This book would be ideal for weekends and holidays to encourage learning at home in a fun and thoughtful manner. Parents can participate in education whilst bonding with their children with engaging exercises.

The book is excellently edited. I loved the extension activities the book provides. Children will be entertained and stimulated for hours with these added extras. I especially liked the illustrations and the comic book style. The story is a little bland and didn’t offer much excitement, so I deducted one star. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.
