I thought I would never throw a book away until I came across a book that had a lot of sexist and racist undertones in it. The author had the audacity to direct the book toward a young audience. Ugh! :x

Yes, of course. First I try to sell, donate or give away. But if the book is in very bad condition, it goes in the trash.

Yes. "Blue Light." Fascinating, well-written, and just a little way into it, contained all kinds of horror and atrocities that I did not want in my mind. It was clear that these were going to continue, and equally clear that, if I kept the book around, I was going to keep reading it, because it was so well-written.

I didn't donate it, because I didn't think anyone else needed that stuff in their mind either. If they want it, they can go out and buy it.

No. I think the only reason I would consider throwing a book away would be if it was damaged beyond readability.

I've never thrown a book away but I intentionally left War and Peace at my cousin's house so I didn't have to bring it on the plane home.

Nope, I have never thrown a book away. I'm a typical hoarder and I can't part with things, far less books, easily.

Not if it was still readable - I'd much rather give it away. I only threw a book out once when it was completely water damaged and fell apart. If I don't want to keep a book I'll give it to the charity shop.

As a children's librarian, I've had to throw away books over the years. Books covered in Gatorade and pages all stuck together, books torn apart by the family pet, books with chunks of pages ripped out (sometimes intentionally), etc. I hated doing it, but sometimes they were just beyond repair. Any worthy book we had to get rid of we would try to replace, though. If books were simply out-of-date, we would find other uses for them--displays, art projects, etc. We would give away duplicates and favorites.

Our new puppy chewed up my book and I knew I needed to throw it away but I still struggled with it. I will donate to the local libraries, used book stores, or women's shelter but I can honestly say I have never thrown a book away before. :D
