I have only three rules to follow—come when called by name, be polite, and don’t pee in the house (“Canine Complaints,” p. 6).

Paws down, Canine Complaints is the sweetest breath of fresh air from the general direction of the kennel in a long time. Arthur Dogson, a cheeky Dachshund and Jack Russell mix, spins some delightful yarns from the canine point of view, with the help of his human, Louise DeVito. DeVito’s background in psychology helps add depth to Arthur’s personality, shaping his character as philosophical, suspicious, and poetic. Dog lovers are sure to enjoy the humor and intelligence in these stories.

Arthur and Pristine are the dogs who live on Misty Meadows Farm. They live with Sammi, the cat, a variety of chickens, and some barn cats. The humans, called sapiens by Arthur, are O’mamma and Mr. Cliff. These characters, and a few others, show up in Arthur’s stories. Arthur is unsure about the book's title but tries to understand why O’mamma chose "Complaints." Mr. Cliff explains that it means "observations."

Arthur's book is divided into short chapters that share his stories and poems. This structure makes it well-suited for reading with children, whether in a classroom or at home. In a family setting, it allows children to take turns reading chapters aloud, creating an engaging shared experience. This is my favorite feature of the book. Additionally, the vocabulary is simple and easy to read. There is an adorable photo of a dog on the book cover, and other illustrations throughout the book to draw readers in and help hold readers’ interest.

I find nothing to dislike about this book. It is exceptionally well-edited, with no editorial errors that I can find. I fully enjoyed reading this delightfully written, fun book and happily recommend it to readers of all ages who enjoy dogs. For all these reasons, it is my pleasure to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This review made me smile! I love books that give animals such unique voices, and Arthur sounds like a truly lovable narrator. The mix of humor, heart, and simplicity sounds perfect for both kids and adults. I’ll definitely be checking out Canine Complaints—especially for read-aloud time with my family.
