A young girl toughened by the challenges of loss and racial prejudice, Jeannie Nicholas's "Kalayla: Unraveling Tangles" follows the life of Kalayla, a mixed-race child. The themes of growth, resilience, and maturity are revealed as the plot unfolds. Apart from the profanity, this book would have been perfect for young readers.

I have read this book a few years ago and remember I liked the interaction between the woman, the grandmotherly love from Lena. I don't recall much of the profanity, so for me it must have had its place in the book and in the story, it did not shock me. A quick check in my book shelves indeed confirmed I have the book 4 stars and I actually might read it again.

Am moved by the story of Kalayla. I want to get this book and learn much about Kalayla's life and how she was able to handle the traits she acquired in her early life. An interesting book to read.

I really appreciated how the story didn’t shy away from showing how generational pain and silence can shape a child’s worldview—Maureen hiding the truth about her own parents actually explained so much about how Kalayla learned to protect herself.

"Kalayla: Unraveling Tangles" by Jeannie Nicholas offers a poignant exploration of resilience and the complexities of identity through the intertwined lives of a young mixed-race girl forced to mature early, her emotionally fragile mother, and their insightful elderly neighbor. The novel highlights the profound impact of relationships and the potential for growth, even amidst hardship and the burdens of unspoken family history.

This book sounds like a story of resilience. Hurdles are part of our lives and no one can tell that they're free of them. In the midst of chaos, books like these gave us motivation and push us to hold on. I like to read stories like these once in a while.

I quite enjoyed the sample from kindle and have officially downloaded the whole book. You really see the complications of family and of being a young girl navigating tough situations at home.

"Kalayla: Unraveling Tangles" by Jeannie Nicholas is a story about a young girl named Kalaya who was faced with life challenges that made her a much tougher girl. She is a mixed-race girl whose father died when she was young and this caused her mother to have a nervous breakdown. She also had to deal with racism. A much older tenant in Kalaya’s building was 72-year-old Lena Barzetti and she lived across the hall on the 4th floor. Lena and Kalaya formed a great relationship and Lena learned Kalaya’s story. Kalaya’s mom, named Maureen, was disowned by her Irish parents when she married a black non-Catholic man named Jamal and he later died in an accident. The story is told by all three female characters: Kalaya, Maureen and Lena. Due to the profanity in the book, it should be read by adults. The official reviewer subtracted a star from her rating because of the crucial audience that did not read the book due to profanity. The book was excellent but it received a 4 out of 5-star rating. I was very intrigue by the official review and the sample and I definitely want to read the entire book.

I have read the sample on Amazon and it has made me so curious that I will need to read the whole book. Kalayla's story is written in a simple yet caltivating way. The sample hints at how cirvumstances can change people's lives. I would love to know how Lena's interference will change outspoken and brash Kalayla's life.
