I like many things about the book just from reading the review. One is that the author has amazing tales to recount and an exceptional ability to narrate them vividly and fascinatingly. The second thing is that there is tension in the book as well, which is what would keep one turning one page after another. Overall, thanks for the amazing review @Poppy Drear.

Having read the sample and the review, the review made me feel even more interested in reading the complete memoir.
The review captures the tension the author experienced, at first being torn between earning an income and cheating at cards, and later on learning the ropes to beat the "system" and becoming good at it. Thank you for the review.

This sounds like an interesting book to dive into. I personally not very much into memoirs but the author's journey almost sounds like an adventurous fiction. And the review stated that the writing is very good which makes it even more compelling.

This is a very perceptive and well written review of Heat in the Vegas Night. You've done an excellent job of evaluating the book's strengths, especially how Jerry Reedy (writing as Red) manages to present a good story despite the usual flaws of memoirs.

I particularly appreciate your focus on the exceptionally polished prose and how it beats the odds for the genre. That s a major concern for a memoir, as you correctly point out, and your use of language to convey it as feeling immersive with just the right amount of detail really sells the experience.

Your observations about the characters how their own personalities and even nicknames help make them more identifiable and the actual portrayal of the extreme pressure situation are correct. It does appear Reedy gets it right in the characterization of who thrives and who fails under such extreme pressure.

Finally, your comment on the structural design of the narrative is excellent. Identifying the familiar pattern of the memoir but explaining how the tension is effectively created by the authorities wising up and by the historical events being used to create a real sense of discovery is a wonderful observation on the pacing and narrative design of the book.

By and large, this review is concise, interesting, and offers a good summary that makes Heat in the Vegas Night sound like a really compelling read for anyone who likes that adrenaline-fueled lifestyle. Good on you.

The author narrates his story as part of a team that scammed casinos. He iterates that it takes a great deal of luck, skill, and social know-how to pull off the scams. Due to the high risk, any mistake could be costly. The book is well-written and the author's escapades will keep readers glued.

The structure this review mentions, or rather, the lack of it, really caught my eye. I love reading books that experiment with the narrative, especially because I appreciate it when an author takes the time to challenge readers and give us more to think about. It does sound like an exciting story in which the people involved probably knew they were playing with fire, but still decided to risk it.

I think casinos do a fair share of cheating, so they're on the lookout for anyone who wants to cheat them as well. Scam is a risky business, especially when the authorities are involved. I appreciate the author telling us about his experiences.

I would want to read "Heat in the Vegas Night" by Jerry Reedy because it sounds like an exciting adventure, and Red’s life scamming casinos is both risky and smart.

Like the reviewer, I agree that the story flowed nicely. The review was greatly written. The book sample I read, was an enjoyable read. It was neat to see the point of view of someone that that cheated the mob playing games at the casino. I am looking forward to reading more of the book.
Congratulations on the BOTD.

Heat in the Vegas Night by Jerry Reedy is a thrilling true-crime memoir that plunges readers into the dangerous world of blackjack cheating in 1980s Las Vegas. Reedy’s first-hand account of how he and his crew used a concealed mirror device to peek at dealers’ hole cards is both gripping and eye-opening.

The story is told with vivid detail, capturing the high-stakes tension and the cat-and-mouse game they played with casino security. Reedy’s writing style is fast-paced and engaging, drawing you into the glitzy but gritty underbelly of Sin City.

Some parts of the book can feel a bit repetitive, but overall, it’s a fascinating read that pulls back the curtain on a lesser-known chapter of casino history. If you’re a fan of true crime, gambling lore, or daring cons, this book delivers a wild ride that will keep you hooked until the very end.

"Heat in the Vegas Night" by Jerry Reedy is an exceptional memoir that showcases the author’s experiences as part of a team that scammed casinos by cheating at blackjack. The author, also known as Red, realizes that although the rewards are great, it is an incredibly risky endeavor where even a tiny mistake could end in disaster. It takes a lot of experience, strategy and luck to scam casinos when casino management and the police being just one step behind the scammers. The scammers have to stay alert and watch the faces of the gamblers as they move in and out of the group. The stakes get higher as the games go on. This is not a book about how to win at blackjack, so the detail and tactics provided are used to illegally scam the casino. Developing strategies to beat both the casinos and the police in a game of cat-and-mouse. This scam game is something that very few gamblers could do successfully. Many may try but few will win. In this story, the tension increases as the authorities wise up to the group’s tricks. The team members each have assigned roles including the brain, watchers, pit boss distractors and the runner. All members clearly know the game and strategies as to when to hit, stand, double down or split. They were playing against the mob, casino employees and law enforcement so the rewards had to clearly exceed the risk. The new member would be the runner whose job was to grab the cheating mirror and run as fast as possible out of the casino without being caught. The chase would continue outside the casino so the runner would have to ditch the device if it looked like he was going to be caught since if caught without the device would only ban the runner from the casino. I plan to read the entire book since I am a beginner at blackjack and I would like to learn the game. This book is a great read for anyone interested in professional gambling and the casino culture.
