Exploring Wine Regions—Bordeaux, France, by Michael C. Higgins, PhD, is a thoroughly researched book about the Bordeaux region of France. It educates the reader about the standard of wines, the official classifications, and their rich history. It is also a beautiful current visitor’s guide to the original and unique Bordeaux Wine Region. Exquisitely illustrated and professionally written, Dr. Higgins expertly walks the reader through the various appellations and chateaus. He indicates that it is all about the terroir, which dictates the particular type of grape that will thrive. He shares the unique features and gastronomic delicacies correlated with maps for easy comprehension. The book is formatted in a logical order, as a visitor would encounter the region from south to north.

I would proudly display this book on my coffee table and use it as a reference. I would also purchase it as a gift for a friend who has any interest in wine, be they a novice or expert. The illustrations alone capture the reader’s attention. When drawn in, you will learn about the rich history, the variations in terroir, and vintners throughout the centuries. The book offers a current guide to exploring the region with options for taking advantage of the historic, award-winning wines, food, and accommodations to plan a fascinating and educational trip through Bordeaux.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, as I highly recommend it. The editing is impeccable. The author demonstrates extensive exploration and research on Bordeaux and educates the reader. From beginner to expert, anyone can appreciate the regional history, the vintners, the wine, the terroir, the tips, the travel, the recommended accommodations, and so much more. I will follow Dr. Higgins's recommendations, although it will be difficult to choose which journeys to omit for lack of time. I am now more educated about this wonderful region, the origination of wine classifications, and why terroir matters.
