Re: What book feature turns you away from choosing a book?

What will keep my from choosing a book is finding out that it is riddled with cuss words, has explicit sex scenes or graphic depictions of violence. I scour through the reviews for authors I am not familiar with in order to determine whether or not they have this kind of content.

I open it, and if it's in the 1st person, I walk away. With ebooks, I download the free sample. Unprofessional writing makes me walk away.

I can give or take covers, but bad formatting seriously turns me away from books. It could be a great book but if the formatting sucks I just can't get over it.

The features of not a good cover are probably the main feature that turns me away from choosing a book. Also if I don't like the genre.

Small print usually discourages me from reading a particularly book.

Any time the description or cover suggests it's romance heavy I avoid it.

Yeah I agree with the covers, but also if the synopsis on the back of the book is implying a different story than the book is actually about I usually get frustrated.

The short little description of the book given by goodreads is usually the deal breaker. That is the author's chance to pull me in and when all that is said is utter fluff then I'm sorry I will no longer invest in a book if they couldn't even get that couple of lines right.

I have always hated science fiction, details about guns and vehicles, butt spanking and blah bullshit. Vampires, werewolf and ghosts are something I would never want to read about.

If the cover looks uber cheesy, I pass on it. A lot of the time though it's the description of the book. That largely depends on my mood. One day it might not sound so appealing and the next day it's all I want to read.

When the book is written like it could have been written by a thirteen year old... I am turned off. I love substance in writing.

Naked men on the cover.
A plot line that sounds like its been done too many times.

The number oen thing that will turn me away are explicit and detailed rape scenes. I can't tolerate them. If I really want to read a book, like if it was a romance, I'll skip that scene and go on. But 99% of the time I won't even read the book.

Also, if a book is known to have an unhappy or sort of good, but not really happy kind of ending, then I'll skip it. For new series or authors I'm not sure of, I try to go on Goodreads and scope out without reading too many spoilers what the reactions are to the ending. If people seem satisfied or the book has multiple high ratings, I'll give it a try. Satisfying and positive-feeling endings are important to me. I'm a type of person that I become involved with the plot and characters a lot. So a bad ending makes me very, very grumpy.

I judge a book by its cover. Maybe not a good habit but there sooo many books out there. At first I look at the cover than turn it around to read the description
