Do you feel it is rude to interrupt someone while reading?

I don't think it's all that bad. I guess if I really didn't want to be interrupted, I would shut myself off to where I couldn't be bothered, but I can definitely see why it would be annoying or rude.

Generally, I don't really want to bother anyone when they're doing something. Reading is having a deep connection with a book a that moment. That makes it more solemn in a way that I personally don't want to be cut off. But "rudeness" is subjective. Different reactions would be solicited from different kinds of people.

I'm not sure -- I wouldn't say rude so much as I would say it's distracting. It's not like belching loudly in public!
The public attitude towards reading nowadays is more that it's something you do to get your mind off of something or when you have no other option. When someone interrupts me while reading, I usually assume that they think I don't have anything better to do and are trying to "help". It becomes a different case when they repeatedly interrupt your reading, but I'm not super bothered by it initially!
What's REALLY rude is when strangers explicitly and conspicuously LEAN IN on someone who is reading in order to either obstruct their view of the book to get their attention -- or to read the book along with them! Please give me my thinking space, Mr Random Stranger Whom I Don't Know But Is Now Breathing Down My Neck!!!!!

I think it depends on what I'm reading. Of it's a book I've read before I don't mind as much but if it's new to me I can't stand being interrupted. My boyfriend's mom does it to me all the time when I'm laying outside reading and I constantly lose my place. I hate it.

When I read I am out of this world and into the next so I take care to find space and time when nobody can interrupt.

So yes,I do think it is insensitive to expect when you are deep in a book to drag yourself out of it for a triviality - in the same way as you would not waken someone up unless it was absolutely necessary.

The world of dreams and the world of books are one and the same to me.

I think we should think twice before interrupting a reader, but if the house is on fire the reader probably won't be bothered by the interruption. I tell my son if there's flames or blood you can bother me (paper cuts don't count), anything else can wait.

Yes I do, but sometimes I feel awkward when the tables are turned such as if my friends are reading and I want to say something to them. I just make a point of telling everyone "I'm going to read now! Pretend i'm not here!" and put a do not disturb sign on my bedroom door. I don't know if it's just me or not but, I have a hard time reading with people in the room; it's very distracting.

Yes, and no. Generally speaking, yeah, I do think it's rude to interrupt them. Especially if there are other people around that you can talk to instead. But if they're joining in the conversation every now or again, or you just want a quite conversation to see what they think of the book, I think it's fine. You just have to tread carefully.

Its annoying, definitely...but the people who interrupt you when you are reading are normally ones who don't really understand this, so its tricky to get them to leave you alone.
