"The Cornish Trilogy" by Robertson Davies

Post by megustaleer »

The Cornish Trilogy
I read The Rebel Angels, the first book in this trilogy, for a book group ten years ago. I enjoyed it very much, and intend to read the other two. Unfortunately, I was only loaned the book, so have only been looking out for the others in charity shops, without success.

(Yes, librarians amongst us, I could borrow it, but I have this huge TBR* pile to get through first!)

The story takes place in a Canadian University (on the Oxbridge model), where there are some amusing shenanigans over the apparant discovery of unpublished letters by Rabelais. There is a cast of odd academic characters, much academic and literary allusion and the style is (according to my notes made at the time) reminiscent of both Tom Sharpe and Terry Pratchett.

As I had only read one book by each of these authors, I would not regard that as a necessarily accurate comparison.

So, has anyone else read the Cornish Trilogy? Or anything else by Robertson Davies?
I have also read his novel Murther and Walking Spirits.
