Homer and Rick Riordan

Homer perhaps was not an author at all, but credited with the creation of The Odyssey and The Iliad through the oral culture of Ancient Greek storytelling. Regardless of who he/she may have been, the epics hold a classic place in literary history and influence a lot of work today. One author that seems to have sparked an interest in Greek Mythology and Ancient Greece is Rick Riordan with his Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson series. I have encountered a few of these novels, and I am wonder what impression others have when considering the two spectrums? I feel that the Gods and Goddesses play very different roles in each of these author's works, but is it only due to the intended audience, or the time period?

My kids have really enjoyed the Riordian series', and I love the way it gives them an entry into mythology. It's a bit random in it's education, and makes assumptions on some background that they don't know, but it expands their knowledge...how can it be wrong. And now they are excited about learning more about the Norse gods.
