We actually just have the standard store bought emergency kits in our vehicles... and like.. um... man... we should watch Dooms Day Preppers and get better at this. I mean we have all kinds of supplies and extra food and whatnot in the house... but it isn't specifically for emergencies... it just is. We have a lot of rice, beans, pasta, canned food, gallons of water, candles, matches, firewood, flashlights, duct tape, various tools,.. we actually don't have any fire arms. I've never shot a gun. I was actually thinking about asking for lessons for Christmas. haha

Suzy you have fasted for 33 days?!?! oh man kudos you are far superior to me. I can hardly make one day. Then I'm like having sugar and caffeine withdrawals. I should probably start eating healthier. haha.

Truth be told, it's the first 72 hours that's a killer! if you can survive that you're home free............all hunger leaves you, and is replaced by incredible energy............mentally, it's a " high " that is difficult to describe........

When the body " detoxifies " amazing things happen...you enter another world...
It's still part of my life, but only once a week for 24 hours...( my Doctor /Mentor /Guru is no longer w/us ), and I'd only trust him for such an extended fast at his facility in Florida where I lived at the time...

He's the one who taught me how badly SUGAR, SALT, and PRESCRIPTION/ NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ruin our health...
Two thousand years ago Hipocrates said : " Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food "......

The atrocious American diet is directly linked to whatever ones medical probs are, not helped by Western medicine /doctors who treat symptoms rather than " root causes " WITH PILLS!

Oh interesting! I'm from Florida originally and all of my family still lives there. Where at in Florida? Yeah I have become pretty skeptical about pills... I've never been fond of taking medicine anyway. haha. I'm thinking about making a transition into less processed foods and cutting out sugar in my diet... but it seems a bit overwhelming and in looking into it all initially healthy food seems so expensive.... but I might just have some laziness to get over.

The fasting facility was located in Lake Worth Florida...

You're right! making a " transition " in your diet can be very daunting if you don't do it GRADUALLY...
For example start off w/including something natural/fresh ( not from a box or can ) w/every meal, a fruit, veggie, etc...
Then take it from there in VERY small increments...

Your goal eventually would be to eliminate processed /canned / boxed " food ", for food that COMES FROM THE GROUND...all empty calories, ( sugary crappy pastries, white bread, etc. ) must be GONE!...very easy these days w/natural sweeteners like STEVIA, etc. that don't wreak havoc w/insulin, glucose levels in your bloodstream...

After 3 days you lose your sweet tooth, and can better satisfy your cravings w/PROTEIN snacks...( nuts, cheese, seeds, etc )

re " expensive " would you rather spend your money on nutritious foods, vitamins, etc. OR doctors, meds, hospitals, aspirin, alka seltzer, cold remedies, tums, sleeping aids for insomnia etc. ?...........not to mention suffering /pain even associated w/every day maladies, and missed days at work / school...

Fasting, is a good way to start, Psyching yourself up is of the utmost importance, changing your diet takes tremendous motivation...

Good luck!

P.S. check out " Fasting can save your Life " by Herbert Shelton ( a Naturopath doctor )...I think it's a FREE download online...

Suzy that is amazing. I don't think there is any way I could fast like that….as I sit here eating a chocolate chip cookie

I know a lot of what I eat is unhealthy that is just common sense. I would love to break my bad habits for good. I'm lucky because I do like natural foods. Sadly I like all the bad stuff too, lol.

What is a sample day for you and what you eat?

Trust me If I could do it ANYONE can!

I eat everything that comes from the ground, the sea, farms, etc...primarily protein, fruits and veggies, dairy products and whole grains...........

Breakfast mainly eggs ( almost 2 dozen a week )............I have very low CHOLESTOROL, the docs are wrong, but Dr. Robt. Atlins was RIGHT!.............it's SUGAR that is the culprit, not steaks, cheese, and butter...

Today, 2 scrambled egg cheese omelet, whole grain English muffin, Skim milk half of a Honeydew melon Orange, kiwi, banana fruit salad...

Lunch baked Halibut stuffed w/Crabmeat, Pea pods, carrots, asparagus vinaigrette w/ grape tomatoes and Gorgonzola cheese...

Dinner Black bean soup, Ham n' swiss sandwich on whole grain Rye w/oven fried steak fries and homemade cole slaw...

Rotating Snacks, depending on my " leftovers ".......... kale chips, popcorn, baked apple, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, Muesli, whole grain pretzels, sugar free Breyers ice cream, S.F. frozen yogurt, S.F. cookies, chocolate, cake, homemade tater chips ( 5 minutes w/my new " chip maker " )
Pineapple slices, dates, figs, raisins, dried peaches and apricots, S.F. cheesecake, grapes, watermelon, cherries, etc...Guacamole w/whole grain corn chips, homemade bean dip, SF pudding, jello, SF Werther's butterscotch and coffee hard candies...V-8, Borscht, Kefir milk, Almond milk, Turkey, roast beef, salami slices, Thai shrimp rolls, deviled eggs, shrimp cocktail, cold chicken, olives, herring tidbits smoked salmon, smoked local trout, pimiento cheese ( homemade ), pan fried Plantains w/honey and sour cream, tacitos, Quesadillas, Chinese spareribs, Pate, baby carrots w/homemade buttermilk ranch dip, Rumaki ( bacon wrapped chicken livers broiled in sweet n sour sauce ), ham , egg, and chicken salad on whole grain pita crackers, cold raw oysters, etc...who wouldn't enjoy these healthy party /cocktail type snacks / canapés ?

I eat 6 small meals a day + snacks............if I keep my " blood sugar " level I avoid becoming overly hungry and out of control w/a ravenous appetite and terrible " mood swings ".......A high protein diet is KEY for me...I'm always munching on the good stuff..

If I wait too long between meals the damage is already done...........if I'm out, you'll never catch me w/o nuts, seeds, dried fruit. and cheese in my purse...

Hope this helped!

When I am working out consistently I crave protein all the time! It is like the healthier I am the more good food that my body tries to get me to eat. I compliment the Designer for that! :D

Cool! Thinking about the Dr. bills definitely puts expensive into perspective... and I will totally check out that book. And yeah the slowly shifting over seems like the best approach. My biggest problem is when I get started into a new thing and then some social event comes up. I am a sucker when it comes to peer pressure. Especially when people buy me stuff because they assume I'm just saying no because I don't want to spend the money. Then its like I have to eat it (or drink it).

I lol'd ylisa reading that you were eating a cookie. I was eating an almond roca. (Ah!) *puts it down*

And rssllue that is interesting. I don't think I remember a time when I craved anything actually good for me.... well now that I thought about it. I guess I did when I Was younger and in sports. I used to crave like green beans and steak. mmm steak. But nowadays its all sugar and chips. NOT GOOD! I need to break this cycle before it takes my life! *runs away from the sugar while throwing the chips at it to get away*

Once you start eating " clean ", your cravings will change, it's amazing what your body will tell you if you " listen to it "

It's been said that it takes 90 days of " behavior modification " for a new habit to kick in, so I always try to hang in there ...

Giving up CIGGIES, was the absolute WORST!
