Woodland Nymph wrote:I've been interested in Anaïs Nin ever since I learned she had an affair with the playwright Antonin Artaud. I bought one of her novels at a used book sale, but I haven't gotten around to reading it just yet. I'd love to read her journals sometime, especially the parts where she describes her relationship with Artaud.
Only ever read her short stories, I wasn't even aware she'd written novels too. Must check them out.

I used to think some stuff I read was a guilty pleasure, like "I should be reading Agamben right now, but instead I'm wasting precious minutes of my life reading Twilight!" But now...meh, I read what I like, and so far, I like my taste.

Anyway...the lighter stuff~

The Vicky Bliss series and the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. I haven't read her latest Peabody books, though, because-honestly-I don't like the character anymore. But, Vicky Bliss, you rock!

The Sookie Stackhouse series. I was rolling my eyes at the obviousness, and yet I read (almost) every book! Still, the t.v. series is better, because Bill is not such a lame-tard.

If you want reeaaallly cheap wish-fulfillment ladies~The Twilight series. The angle is so hugely obvious (eternal, devoted love and stunning beauty) but I let myself get hooked anyway.

There's more, of course.... 8)

A while back I would have said I didn't have one but then came Twilight. I liked the series in spite of myself and get this, I even enjoyed the movie  Usually the fact that I like a book makes me not really care what others think and I tell them that if they try to criticize my choice in reading. Well not really tell as in saying it out loud but I sure think it at them and if they could read minds they would have received a vicious scolding!

 Are you on Team Eric too? I have to say that I'm not Bill's biggest fan in the TV series, but he's had some great lines...like his hatred of cell phones. I also think it's hilarious that he refuses to use contractions.

These aren't really guilty pleasures for me. I own my nerdiness with pride! :D

I'm so glad that my two biggest ones have been widely mentioned already. I love, love, love the Twilight Series and the Sookie Stackhouse novels. But sometimes I get the side-eye from other grown folks who see me reading Twilight novels.

I can't believe that no one has 'fessed up to being a Harry Potter lover yet. Come on out of the woodworks; I know you're there... I've read all of the books multiple times and sometimes I just break one out when I'm bored and start perusing my favorite parts again. Nothing to be ashamed of there...

I do admit to loving the Stackhouse series & I'm 60 yrs old.... I also love a good cosy series like M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin & Hamish Macbetb series. I haven't heard anyone mention her yet. They do get pretty repetitive if you read them too often though, so I try to space them out.

Has anyone read Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series? Darkover was a colony that got left behind by earth (they didn't know their own history) of people who have "special" gifts like mind-reading, etc. Love those!

I also like Margaret Frazer's Dame (or sister) Frevisse series. She's a medieval nun/detective, of all things. And Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma, another medieval Irish nun/detective. Last, but not least, Ellis Peters' (Edith Pargeter) Brother Cadfael series. He's a medieval brother. I didn't realize until now how many clerical series I read....

And, I do admit to loving Elizabeth George who writes police procedurals about England even though the English aren't really thrilled with her. I wonder why???

you aren't alone-I enjoy the Beaton books as well, although i find Hamish to be more appealing for me. Agatha can be a bit irritating, like the long drawn out obession with James. Victoria Holt and Dick Francis are long time favorites as well.
