Anyone read the maturin/Aubrey series? Master and commander was the rather poor film, Mel Gibson starred, iirc.

It's all rather descriptive and flowery, but there's something about it - sometimes a bit painful, like an annoying little brother- that requires the next boook to be read. Beautifully, and very knowledgeably written.

I have not read it, what is the basic story line?

It's a series of naval books based just before to after the Napoleonic wars, intrigue, ambition of Aubrey and an all round good naval rad. Not usually my sort of thing, but I fell into it prety quickly because of the writing style and the 3d characters. It's written by a very knowledgeable author who will educate you on ye olde sailing ships, the hardship of it, and then some heroic cavalier, well written adventure. But descriptive!
