What book feature turns you away from choosing a book?

I'm usually turned off by romance book covers, where a couple is kissing or about to kiss. I usually completely ignore books like those. I'm very guilty about judging books by their covers; if the cover doesn't catch my attention, I won't read the book.

I actually really don't like books with pictures on the front, I much rather something that is artistic but not a picture if you understand what I'm trying to say

If the synopsis of the book doesn't hit a nerve then I'm less likely to read it. Also the book title is a major thing. The book tittle has to be able to draw me in. Saying that though I'm always willing to give every book a chance.

If the cover of the book shows too much of violence, then I will not choose that book.

I personally don't like books that are set 50 + years ago. I find it hard to relate to when a book is now written in the present time. I prefer that a book is written in present times. If that makes any sense. Maybe I don't like the setting being so in the past because it reminds me of history. I have never liked history in school.

A boring cover is always a major turn off for me. If the cover doesn't grab my eye than I usually pass over it. Recently I have been trying to train myself to at least read the back cover of a book rather than simply pass it over, but with little time to really shop for books if it doesn't jump out at me than I move on.

Top 3, in no particular order:

1) Bad writing. I just can't abide by it. I always read the first few pages of a book before buying to see if I can tolerate the voice.

2) Pornographic scenes... really just don't care to read that stuff, so I will drop a book if there's much of this (or sometimes any).

3) Extreme blood & gore. I like reading fantasy, war stories, and thrillers, and can put up with some of this. However if I feel like the author is really relishing the notion of violence and the bloody scenes are reflecting obvious delight on the author's part, I tend to get uncomfortable.

I usually can't do the covers of certain romance novels either. What will turn me off of a book once I start reading it though is an extreme amount of language. I don't like language at all in books. I can handle certain words here and there, but if it's constant then I just won't do it. If the language is very little, then I can usually ignore it and just focus on the story line. What bugs me the most though is when an author uses bad language so much that you can't even concentrate on the story. So the covers and that will usually turn me off of a book. If I am typically enjoying the first five chapters, then I know it's going to be a good book, usually.

Well, if I'm purchasing an e-book I tend to read (with a grain of salt) the amazon reviews if there are a fair amount available. I look for recurrent themes or comments, rather than a good or bad review to decide if the book or series of books is for me.

If I'm choosing a book to review I read the book description, of course, but if the author's bio is completely lacking in information, is very poorly written or doesn't draw my attention I likely won't choose to review that book.
