I paid for a review and press release from a group who will go unnamed. When I got a copy of the PR to review I spotted typos and one of the character's name was incorrect. I pointed out the errors and received another copy to sign off on and guess what? The character had yet another name that wasn't right. The name at least started with the right letter that time.

Good article, but I would be very careful about paying for reviews. Amazon, especially, is very particular about this sort of thing, so you need to really do your research and make sure that the service you're using is reputable. If you're publishing an e-book, the forums over at (mod note: name removed) are a really good place for keeping tabs on reputable sources.

In my experience, I've had better success simply offering a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. Then, don't press. If you get a review out of the deal, awesome, if not, oh well.... You can't win them all.

I know this feeling as well! Even members of my own family will not leave a review. It's like it's true troublesome for them or something.
