I believe that no amount of reading is too much. If you want to grab a book from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep with the very same book in your hand, there is no problem with that. Read, read, read.

In my opinion, you can't do too much reading. I do the important stuff first that needs to be done, like my college classes, first and then I read in my free time. Although I guess school work technically involves reading too. It's just not as fun as reading a good romance or suspense novel. So to answer your question, I think your safe to read when you are really in the mood. Obviously dealing with kids and stuff like that would come first, but in between I would say read away. I find that it is a good way to relax and take my mind off of any stressful situations. Like you said, it is much better than constantly playing video games. I hope this is helpful.

As someone who has stayed up till 5 am on school nights when I was younger, I can vouch that sometimes one can read too much. I have missed out on times with my family and friends because I had my nose stuck in a book. At times my eyes would start to shake and things would appear blurry, because I read too much. I know that's unhealthy, but it's really hard putting down a good book. I've gotten better, but I'll still stay up till the wee hours of the morning. Anyways, I do think there that one can read too much. I say limit yourself to one book a day. JK. Rather, instead of reading when other people are around, put down the book and interact with them. Sometimes it's more fun than reading. Other times it's a bore, but at least you're giving your eyes a rest.

I absolutely agree that it is more productive to read than to play video games. There should be a limit on video games if someone enjoys playing them so much. I play games on my ipod all the time, but I do try to balance it out and do other things as well. I don't just spend all day on it. Besides, I think reading is more fun anyway.

I agree too, and I also feel that reading is better than television. When you read, you create a world in your head. That takes effort, whereas with TV/movies/video games, the work is done for you. Balance is good, and I personally would never give up TV!

I agree with some of the others, that if reading is taking away from responsibilities it is too much. Everything can fall under this in my opinion. I love to read and I would much rather use my imagination in books than watch tv or movies.
I have two girls and neither one of them likes to read. I think the reason for this is they did not get to read what they wanted and write a report. They had to read certain books for certain points, and there were "ar" books which is all they were allowed to read for school. Some of the best books had no "AR" value so my kids couldn't read them and get credit. They had enough AR points to get that reading for pleasure wasn't really something they wanted to do. I feel like they have missed out on many great stories and probably always will. I did pick out stories and read them out loud to them that I though they would enjoy as a way to spend time together.

I believe that when you start to neglect your other real life responsibilities, then there's too much reading.

In the examples of the people I gave above though, I think both could be seen as "unhealthy." I honestly don't know how to get that boy off the laptop. He throws a hissy fit anytime someone suggests he does something else. If he was my child I think i would be limiting the amount of time he is playing. For me as a child and now as an adult- I would much rather read for a few hours than play a video game.

I agree. I would definitely cut off some of the time that my child spent playing video games. It's not that it's a bad thing, but there is definitely such a thing as too much video games. I would say an hour or two a day is sufficient enough, if they are so bent on playing them. Encouraging them to read more would definitely be my goal. It is much more productive than video games.

I believe that there is no such thing as too much reading. Knowledge is power, and reading definitely gives you knowledge. However, there are boundaries that should not be crossed. It all depends on your personal life. If you have a house with kids and a husband, you need to set your boundaries. You need to set your responsibilities first, and then pleasure, reading. Work then pleasure.

I believe that I do well in my professional and in my personal life, but there can never be too much reading. I guess balance is the key, though I will admit to not sleeping to finish a book more often than I should.

To me, there can never be too much reading! Well, I guess, unless it starts to take over your life. That might be a little too much...

There is validity in the pure health concerns of reading so much that you disregard your personal health. However, I don't think that there is any problem with being "obsessed" with reading and just loving it
