Kappy wrote:Excellent review. But a good book is a good book. I haven't read it, but my guess is that it is suitable for a much wider readership than "girls aged 11-14."

The Library of Congress has a list of classic books for "kids" which includes Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Dracula, Moby Dick, A Study In Scarlet, and White Fang.

The Contra Costa County Library includes the following in its "Best Young Adult Book" list: The Call of the Wild, A Christmas Carol, Dandelion Wine, Ethan Frome, The Fellowship of the Ring, Foundation, Frankenstein, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Macbeth, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, The Red Badge of Courage, and Wuthering Heights.

I hope the author never considers her book to be inferior to "adult" books; most of the great classics that have withstood the test of time are regularly mentioned in various lists of books for "kids."

Thanks, Kappy! I completely agree--a good book is a good book, regardless of the target audience. If I'm not mistaken, the whole concept of the target audience is a twentieth century invention for marketing purposes. Personally, I read both "adult" and "child" books all of the time, and many times I enjoy the latter over the former!

Sounds like a good book. Great review, as I actually get the whole idea of what I can expect out of this book, should I read it.

I just bought this and I am about 100 pages in. This is not something I would generally choose to read, but I am enjoying it so far. I wasn't really sure what to expect. I like that the book of the month features books that have been reviewed on this site and not just big name titles.

So do I! In the late 1940's, and throughout the 1950's, Robert Heinlein (widely regarded as the best SF author of all time) wrote a bunch of science-fiction novels; about half of them were marketed as being for "juvenile" readers. I have read them all, and the only difference I noticed was that the "juvenile" novels featured teenaged protagonists, rather than adult protagonists.

I'm sorry I won't be able to read this book for the month. The library doesn't have a copy and, though it's quite reasonably priced on Amazon, I simply don't have the extra income right now to buy a copy. Perhaps next month!

I've noticed the same thing! The only difference between "adult" and "juvenile" books is the age of the characters. The quality of the writing and the story itself are usually the same (if not better in the "juvenile" books, because the authors cannot rely on sex and violence to drive the plot forward and have to be creative).

This is a wonderful review and very informative for anyone who wants to read the book. Like many others have said, this is the perfect book for teens to read. It expresses the thoughts and feelings of what it is like to be a teenager.

I am almost finished with the book, and I don't want it to end! I am hoping the author will consider writing about these characters as they age. I'm thinking there could be sequels, such as Forever Thirteen, Fourteen, etc.
