I don't think there could ever be a point where one can read too much. I find that knowledge and exploration can both be found within the lines of a good book and that no matter how foreign they seem, they can help enhance the reality one lives in. I feel like the only way someone would be readying too much is when it's become like a sort of addiction- like where you physically just can't stop. It starts getting in the way of common day things like grocery shopping or work or church perhaps and it develops into a habit where you find yourself losing things you lament having lost.
But, my God! When would that ever happen?

I think you can never read too much. If there was such thing as too much I would be way over the limit.

That is a very good point. Reading is definitely a good way to pass the time, and to escape from any troubles someone may be having. However, if it gets in the way of other responsibilities then it could become a problem. Obviously, important responsibilities should come first but reading is something to do during free time.

Is there such a thing? I think I achieve the perfect balance while juggling work & home currently. I fully intend to be a fulltime reader when I retire.

Personally, I don't think that reading should have a limit. However, my eye doctor did tell me to ease up on reading. He believes a book doesn't have to be completed in one day. If it's in my hands usually I start and finish that day. No, I don't have vision problems. He wanted to warn me of eye strain.

There is no such thing as too much reading, unless you are totally ignoring everything, and maybe not eating and stuff. For me it is just a great way to be a able to leave the trouble of the real world behind and not have to worry about it.

I am not sure if there is such a thing as too much reading though I do agree with gali. However there are times that I catch myself neglecting things like eating, and more usually housework (I tried reading while I was doing dishes once - didn't go well). I do know that I spend as much time reading as some people spend time in front of the television.

I find that too often I am guilty of letting things slide until I get just one more chapter in, but of course before I know it, I've finished the book. I am a housewife so I am able to get everything done in a day and still indulge in my passion. To me, there is really no such thing as too much reading.

When I miss my train stop because I am reading and not paying attention to my surroundings, and then I am late for work; that's how I know I have read too much 8)

I definitely think that it is important to read and to read a lot. It's important to encourage young readers to unplug and read on a consistent basis for sure. But, I also think that too much of anything is a bad thing. You don't want it to keep you from your responsibilities and your own life experiences. Reading is supposed to nurture and enrich the parts of our lives that we cannot experience for ourselves...maybe its because those experiences do not exist within this world or maybe because those experiences are out of our reach for whatever reason. Reading tends to also put us in other people's shoes and we learn how to see things from multiple sides of any given situation. It also expands our imagination and creative thinking. So lots of reading is important, but not so much that it keeps us from using these skills that we obtain from reading throughout our daily lives.

I love reading - shocking I know, especially being a member of this online book club. I always try to sneak in reading during the day, but I know that I get really invested in what I am reading. I do not like being interrupted, and I really do not like putting books down. It can be a problem when I need to get things done. I have been late for a few things because of a good book. I really only think I can read too much when it prevents me from getting things done that need to get done.

As a reading specialist, I encourage people to read as much as they want to although I also agree that you have to have a balance for children. They need the interaction with real people and the exercise but I would hate to discourage the love for reading either.

In my opinion there is no such thing as too much reading. Basically someone who says that is saying that you are learning too much.

As a small child you could find me tucked away reading,as an adult the same is true. I will always read all the time. It's never to much. I have tried to instill the same in my kids. I want them to enjoy reading as much as I have.

No such thing, reading is important for everyone. That's where we gain our knowledge.
