Stereotypes

Post by Miri Faye »

Some stereotypes are good, but others are just hurtful or annoying. Any that you dislike? I don't like the stereotype that in Hawaii everyone dances the hula or plays the ukulele or eats poke all the time.

I don't like the ones that says all Jewish people are rich, cheap and are bad tippers.

Not all the time. Just on weekends. ;)

Kidding!!!

I hate the stereotype that people from the South are stupid. Or talk with a horrible accent.

Yeah, I hate those too. I don't like the one that says that blondes are dumb.

I HATE the one where all lesbians are guyish and / or want to be a boy. I mean I'm 10000% gay but I'm pretty girly to be honest. I also hate the sterotype that all lesbians hate men, my best friend is a guy but I'm still gay.

Isn't there some kind of stereotype that says that aunts are supposed to be awesome?

Ugh.

My own aunt is so snobby and condescending. :(

I hate the one about unethical lawyers, and that all lawyers are bad people. My parents are both lawyers. My mom is retired, but she worked for a judge writing opinions. My dad is practicing, and he never over-bills, chases ambulances, or advertizes with a scary tiger or hammer figure. (I don't know if that's a national thing, but if you live in Louisville, you'll know what I'm referring to.)

To Fran and GirlyLesbian--I have a similar/opposite problem, and I agree with both of yours. I personally hate clothes and makeup and perfume and purses and skirts/dresses, hair products, etc. I also cannot grasp those concepts to save myself. (I tried for years, and then I gave up.) When I have to get dressed up, for whatever occasion, I wind up looking like a twelve year old, at best. I also have a short haircut, and I think people (in person) mistake me for a lesbian, but I'm not one. (No judgment implied, though, for anyone's sexuality.)
