Mourning the loss of books.

Post by cally »

I had nearly 350 books in 2011 and I accidentally burnt our house down I lost more than half of them and what did survive has almost all been lost as well due to moving.

My favorite book is my copy of The Gunslinger by Stephen King, my favorite uncle that taught me how to read gave it to me when I was 12 and it survived the fire and the moving.
It has been my "comfort blanket" since I was 12 it is what I have always taken with me to the hospital it is what I took into surgeries with me all freaking 15, I carried it in my purse or car it helped my cope with my disabling anxiety and chronic illness.

It has so much meaning to me, it is full of stories not just what Stephen King wrote but my memories of all the times I read it and what was happening in my life at the different times I read it.

It survived a fire, moving, a storage room that leaked, being toted around and read over and over again just to have over 80 of its pages ate by a mouse.
Words cant describe how much it hurt me to find my beloved book in ruins along with 2 of my Game of Throne books.

When we discovered we had mice when we moved in we put traps and poison down well apparently they are to smart for that but that's OK my husband brought me a kitten home the day before I discovered the massacre and she is being put to work bringing the murderers to justice.

How do you handle the loss of a book?

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry. I don't even know. I've experienced the same thing--not fire, but a relocation issue involving media mail.

So sorry about your house fire. I hope you don't blame yourself. It could happen to anyone. I'd say, though, that if no one was hurt in the fire, that's more important than any stuff.

I guess you could get another copy of the book? Sigh. I sympathize. I wish I had a better answer.

Everyone was fine and most of the time I dot blame myself anymore it was an accident. Thank you for the kind words!
I know I could get another copy but it wont be the same ya know?

I plan on doing something with the rest of the pages I am just not sure what all yet, I know I am going to decoupage a wine bottle then put clear Christmas lights in it and hang it in my reading corner.

Anymore ideas?

You're welcome!

Ooh, hey! Why don't you frame the cover? You could hang it on the wall or put it on a shelf!!

I was just thinking how pretty it would be to decoupage a christmas ornament with book pages...

142. I have a Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings necklaces that were made from pages of the books that was given to me. I think I am going to try to make one with one of the pages as well.

I could do a few Christmas ornaments and decorate my readin corner with them till Christmas.

I had to get rid of serval hundred books when I moved cross country, I have since replaced most of them but it is not quite the same. some had my notes in the margins, or on the back pages. small personal things that made the book mine. I hope they went to a good home.
