You are a very strong writer. It can't be easy to write a pleasant to read review about an unpleasant to read novel.

I can't tell you, But if you have half a brain, it' pretty easy to figure out before you get to the big reveal.

So I know that the author of this book saw this review, because she posted it on her Facebook page (which has more than 1500 fans), mentioning that this is the FIRST negative review she has ever received. I have to say that this surprises me. Plot of the story aside -- 34 easily noticeable errors in one chapter! How can people more than 1500 followers overlook that?!? I had professors in university who would mark off two points per error on final drafts of papers...

The review sounds more entertaining than the book! As a new member, I've been reading reviews, both good and bad, with interest and it seems that three things come up throughout - you have to have a good idea to start with, you have to be able to present it in an engaging manner and, crucially, you have to have it properly edited. No matter how good the subject matter, grammar can stop it dead in the water. Like others, I hate bad grammar when reading.
Congratulations on seeing it through to the end - a true professional if ever there was one, by the sound of it!

You're definitely right about those three points of a good book! Of course, readers have their own scale of what makes something interesting and how many mistakes are allowed before it becomes bothersome. I like to think that I am pretty liberal in that last realm because I know what it is like to be an independent author without a lot of resources at my disposal and I can think from the viewpoint of the writer who might have overlooked those annoying tiny little words (in, is, if, it... they all start to look the same after a while, haha). As for the good idea and presenting it in an entertaining manner, that's what will ultimately keep me reading. Hopefully...

As you say, it's all subjective and language/grammar are constantly evolving, though not necessarily comfortably. Presumably at some stage apostrophes will be redundant, but until then I will keep my dictionaries and grammar guides close to hand. Possibly from the author's frame of reference, it was all correct, but if you're going to change continents, you ought at least to do your homework on local patois and variations.

I've read my fair share of ones, so I know exactly how you feel. In this one book I read, the author kept using the words "and he/she thought", in stead of just "he thought/she thought". I mean--really?. I sometimes get the feel that these "ones" and "twos" are first drafts that somehow ended up on Amazon to scare bookworms away from reading forever.
