After surviving a life-altering tragedy as a child, Gina Adams has spent much of her life in psychiatric facilities. Gina is a bright young woman with an unfortunate past, but she finally has a job and is on her way to living a relatively normal life. One day she discovers that she is being followed. Not knowing for sure if her stalker is real or a side effect of her medication, Gina turns to the police for help. Police officers, Max and Terri take an interest in Gina, and soon discover that her brains might be just what they need to bring new life to a lengthy murder investigation. The Cracked Shadow by E.A. Petrick is a thrilling mystery that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

This story was very fast-paced and interesting. I am giving this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars because the premise of the story is very original. I did feel like the book was lacking in a few areas, which kept me from giving the book 4 stars. As an example, this book was presented as a romance. While this book does have a love story incorporated into it, I would not categorize it as a romance. The love story definitely seemed like a secondary story to the mystery that was playing out. Being a fan of romance novels, I wished that the love story were more prominent.

I also think that there could have been more character development. Based on the description of this book before I started reading, Max came off as selfish, arrogant, and only interested in sleeping around when it came to women. In the book this behavior was eluded too, but never displayed. The only Max that I felt like I got to know in the book was a good guy. I feel like an opportunity was missed to really show a positive transformation in Max’s character.

I enjoyed the uniqueness of this book the most. Once I had finished reading it, I could not think of another book quite like it, which was refreshing. E.A. Petrick did a good job of weaving multiple stories together to make one dynamic book.

The Cracked Shadow by E.A. Petrick is a thrilling mystery mixed with a budding romance. I recommend this book to anybody with a fondness for murder mysteries. Give this book your undivided attention because things unfold rather quickly, and may be easy to miss!
