Teach Me by Courtney ‘Phoenix’ White is a book in the romance genre. It follows Aminah’s story as she gives in to forbidden temptation and suffers the consequences.

Dr. Aminah Goodwin is a successful college professor living a comfortable life with her husband. This comfortable life comes at a heavy price since she has to constantly compete with her husband’s work commitments to get his attention. Needless to say, she loses this battle and their marriage gradually loses its intimacy. Craving her husband’s attention and reaching the age of forty, has the combined effect of leaving her feeling insecure and vulnerable. Aminah’s disenchantment with her marriage leaves her susceptible to the charms of one of her students. It starts out as innocent flirting but soon Aminah is embroiled in a scandalous affair with this student, an affair that threatens to ruin both her marriage and career. Will Aminah extricate herself from this delicate situation before things go out of hand and ruin all that she has worked for?

The author’s writing style is straightforward and easy to follow. Aminah’s character in the book is a literature (specifically poetry) professor, which might be the reason why all the chapters have a poem preceding them. There is nothing spectacular about those poems, which is a bit disappointing with all the attention given to Aminah’s love for poetry and literature. On the other hand, the dialogue and conversation between the characters is quite witty and humorous.

The passionate scenes are pretty descriptive, which is not a problem. The problem begins when there is too much of repetition and the lack of any substance which makes them seem vulgar. At one point this story seems all about physical intimacy.

The author has portrayed the mid-life crisis experienced by women, through Aminah’s character, quite effectively. In the beginning of the book itself, Aminah explains why marriages might be falling apart and why women are more vulnerable to short term affairs at this time of their age than at any other time. There are plenty of issues plaguing a married couple at this stage of their lives which has been explored by the author through Aminah and Sean’s marriage. The author has focused on how lack of emotional and physical satisfaction is one of the prime causes of broken marriages. The channeling of this frustration into an adulterous relationship is only going to make things worse. The marriage needs to be fixed from inside through the cooperation of both the partners. The author has dealt with these issues in a very non-judgmental manner, which is the major plus point of this book. Aminah’s character is relatable and the issues discussed in this book are real issues affecting marriages in the present day.

The plot of the book would have been better served with good execution, since the storyline is fairly interesting. I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
