Bram and Dissonance must trust each other if they want to save themselves and their world, but trust isn’t so easy to come by for either of them.
Bram Spencer has seen a lot in his relatively young years, which has made him wary of not only trusting others but feeling as if he could never give anyone all of himself, except for misery, heartache, and a future full of troubles. The first time Bram meets Dissonance Walker he knows he shouldn’t get involved, that he had no time to help her as he has his own problems to fix and time is running out. But for some reason he can’t define he just walk away from her, and ends up helping her. But he doesn’t know that one simple act isn’t going to be enough, that there is a lot more to accomplish in order to save Dissonance- and the world.
Dissonance Walker has a lot of reason not to trust anyone, so when she first spots Bram Spencer across the saloon, she understands that trusting him or even asking for his help could very well get her killed, or it could become a case of ‘out of the frypan, into the fire’ but she can’t shake off the feeling that he could be her saviour. So she pleads him to help her, and voila- out of the frypan, into the fire. Or so she thinks at first. But in fact Bram Spencer really does turn out to be her savior. Now if only she could trust him enough to tell him everything.
I won’t say I loved this book from the start, because I didn’t. I kept on reading the book because the summary piqued my curiosity and I wanted see how a woman how has lost her ability to disobey can find love, a chance to live normal life, and restore her ability to disobey. Because the freedom to obey or disobey is essential to our liberty. But now after finishing the whole book I can honestly say that I do in fact love this book.
There are both good parts and bad part about this book, but I am truly glad I didn’t give up on the book. The book does start out a little confusing just because there so many different elements to keep in mind, (sci-fi, old west, futuristic) but it does start to all make sense after as you keep reading. And after a while it’s not hard to keep track of all that’s happening.
Another thing that made the story very confusing for me was the idea that even though these settlers had enough technology to travel from Earth to another planet, they were living in a very “simple” way. It doesn’t make sense to me that people who had the kind of technology to travel in space weren’t able to develop any kind of technology on this new plant and were living as if they really were in the old west where you still had to travel on horses.
The good part was that at the beginning of each chapter there is a little blurb from Harker Shand Delais, one of the original settlers and keeping those in mind as you read each chapter does help the reader understand the story better. Also even though at first Bram was reluctant to help Dissonance, as she becomes his wife his determination to keep her safe and happy no matter what, makes it a swoon worthy romance.
The witty interaction between the two coupled with well written erotic scenes made me love them both. Both Bram and Dissonance have very strong and independent personalities, which sometimes can cause problems for their relationship but mostly they make a great team.
All in all, I feel there are more good parts than there are bad, and if romance is your thing then I recommend you to check this book out, because no matter what other genres are included, this book is a romance novel at heart. I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. I gave it 3 stars because even though it was a great novel to read, it wasn’t perfect, which it could have been and I was pretty confused at times.
