What Instruments Do You Play?

When in high school (graduated in 2007) I played the flute/piccolo, any saxophone the teacher needed, french horn, tympani, and the clarinet (I think that is all ). I was pretty flexible and so if the teacher found a song for the band and it needed an instrument we didn't have since we only had 40 students, I usually took it up for that season. I can still play the flute and tenor sax as I am now helping my little sister and nieces learn but as for the others I still remember the fingerings so who knows!

I played clarinet and taught myself how to play (and eventually write) music on the keyboard. That was years ago, though. I tried to teach myself the guitar but ran into difficulty there. I wouldn't mind trying again, maybe this time with actual lessons. It'd be cool to be able to sing along, as well, just for fun.

I play piano and organ... have played at home and at church. My current love is ukulele which I have played in public as well as at home. I have played guitar and electric bass in church also, but not for a long time now. I dabble on accordion and autoharp and flutophone at home. I "took lessons" on violin for a couple years while in grammar school, but I use the term "took lessons" very loosely! They were not private lessons, but group lessons as part of the small school orchestra and I didn't practice the way I should have! I can "squeak" the scale and somehow get through "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on that instrument, but beyond that? Well, I'd have to PRACTICE!!! a LOT!!!
Oh and yes, I sing... have been involved in many different vocal groups (duets, trios, cantatas) over the years at church. I have also sung and still do occasionally sing for weddings and funerals. And now my husband and I sing and play together --he on guitar and I on ukulele, usually. With his multi-track recorder, we recorded a gospel CD with four-part harmony and several instruments accompanying us. We each also did a vocal solo on it.

For those of you who have tried guitar and are not not quite sure it's working for you, TRY UKULELE!!! I played guitar for a few years and it was fun, but I was quite limited to playing in maybe three keys, semi-comfortably. And then I discovered ukulele! Four strings are much easier to deal with than six. Although there are a few chords that are tricky, I am slowly mastering, one by one, some of the ones I thought I couldn't do!! And I'm learning ways to maneuver some that seem a bit difficult. Slowy but surely!! There are still keys that I avoid(!!) but on the whole, the ukulele is much easier and more fun for me than the guitar.

Music is a major part of my life. I have played the piano since I was 5 years old, and the trumpet since I was 11. Playing the piano helps me to express my emotions and relieve stress. I often play at our church when our pianist has to be out, and I play it daily at home for enjoyment. The trumpet is something I tend to play in the privacy of my home....mainly because I am not the greatest player. When I do play it, I enjoy playing the blues and jazz.
