"Maui on the Rocks" by Oliver Gold is the first novel in the Moving to Hawaii series. It is a fictional, adventure/romance based on a true story of a man who followed his dreams to Hawaii.

Ole Gold began his teaching career in Hawaii. His students called him "Uncle" and the name stuck when he landed a position at the University of Washington. He always dreamed of retiring and moving to Hawaii someday. After years of marriage, his wife refused to move with him and stayed behind in Washington. Uncle Ole begins his long journey of finding self-fulfillment and true love by becoming drunk on his flight to Hawaii. This is just the beginning of a totally engrossing story that is stranger than any fiction could be.

Uncle Ole is a Yogi who hopes his Karma will protect him from his deep-rooted fears, many crazy women, divorce lawyers and an ex-wife. His dream is to find the perfect woman and live a simple life in a tropical paradise. By the way, it would be nice if his true love has lots of money, a big house and a Mercedes convertible.

Oliver Gold is a true, larger-than-life figure. He is a Yogi, teacher and recording artist. He has five CD's of original music and has written thirty-six books. However, "Maui on the Rocks" is the first to be published.

I can honestly say that this is one of the most unique, descriptive and fascinating books I have ever read. It is written from a man's perspective, which shows me a different view of the romantic trysts. Mr. Gold's writing style brings the words on the pages to life with imagery that captures the sights and sounds of an island paradise. Having spent a week in Hawaii many years ago, his vivid descriptions transported me back there. I could hear the pounding surf, feel the warm sun, and smell the tropical flowers on the breeze.

The author pulled me into the life of Uncle Ole. Sometimes his fanciful imagination had me feeling like I was a participant in one of his dreams. The characters were interesting and well-developed. Each one seemed to play a special role in Ole's life. Also, the storyline moved along quickly from one adventure to the next. Uncle Ole has a pure heart with good intentions, but just gets caught up in some strange predicaments. This book was a page-turner from the beginning to the end.

Because of the reasons stated above, and especially due to the extraordinary descriptive writing style, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Any adult with a love of romance, adventure and quirky humor would enjoy this book. I can't wait to read the next installment in the series.

Fantastic and insightful review! I really enjoyed reading it. I love this line "I could hear the pounding surf, feel the warm sun, and smell the tropical flowers on the breeze." it is magical when an author can make you feel so much of the setting.

Nice review! It sounds cute! The "uncle" thing reminds me of Japanese a bit, which probably makes sense, given the historical connection between Japan and Hawaii, so it sounds like something I would be interested in.

This isn't my kind of book, but your review was thoroughly entertaining to read. Thanks for the great review!
