Nantucket Murray is on her way to meet Mr. Gilbert Synder in Benson Creek with marriage in mind as a mail order bride. She was honest with him about her abilities except for one little thing. She stutters and all the men in Boston rejected her because of her stutter. Gil as he was known, told her he had cattle, pigs, chickens and such. He didn’t tell her the pigs and chickens lived in his cabin or that he was short-tempered, loud, cussed like a sailor, his cabin was filthy and he had few to none cooking or cleaning implements. Nan’s father was loud, abusive, cussed and she could not stand those traits now because of him. She didn’t realize what she was getting into with Gil. Gil didn’t realize she stuttered, and the first thing out of his mouth was: “are you dumb“. Things didn’t start on a good footing.

Ms. Morgan’s descriptions of the territory and the cabin were so good, I could see it all in all its glory. I could see the dust, mud, the sow, Mirabel and her piglets running out of the cabin and the manure and filth on the floor. She spent 2 hrs cleaning the cabin; Gil had a fit because his animals were outside for the wolves and mountain lions to attack. Not a good beginning for Nan and Gil. I smiled through all this, as it was such a shock to a girl from Boston. Ms. Morgan infused just the right amount of humor in the story; you can’t help but laugh. I love a good short story filled with laughter and emotion.

Ms. Morgan created a story of a rough cowboy, and a tender emotionally injured woman. They have to learn to accept each other with all their faults. This is a sweet love story. It is short but full of emotion. I found I enjoyed this story and plan to read the other books Ms. Morgan penned.
