Leather and Lace, written by Samantha Cole, is the first novel in the Trident Security series. This novel can be classified as an erotica BDSM novel with a hint of classic romance and action tied in.
Kristen Anders is a newly single, recently divorced, woman who has just moved down to Tampa, Florida to begin the next chapter in her new life, as well as the next chapter in her new book. Kristen is a seasoned novel writer, having published several “vanilla” romance novels, but has since moved on to the darker and more twisted scene that is BDSM. While doing research for her current novel in a local BDSM club, she runs into Devon. Devon, having seen Kristen once previously, offers to introduce her to the world that he has immersed himself in. While only a small offer was given, the story takes an unexpected turn and throws the story into an action packed turn that keeps the reader hanging on every word.
I enjoyed the story line that was chosen for this book. Everything ties together very well and gives you a bit of insight into a couple of different worlds. The author took multiple plots and tied them together to keep you intrigued and guessing at every turn. The characters were very well developed and the author provided very detailed and interesting back stories for each character, not just the main ones. I was able to appreciate the effort the author put into creating the characters to make them very relateable.
The only downside I found to the book was the erratic changes of pace from one plot line to the next. The different plots all tied in together throughout the book, but the setting changed so fast that it took a minute to catch up. The setting changes needed to be a little more subtle so that the reader is able to have an idea where things are headed and be able to keep up.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It gives a very nice introduction into the BDSM world and contains a lot of the typical scenes that one would associate with BDSM. The book did change directions rather suddenly but it doesn’t take away from the allure of the story line. I would recommend this book to those who are curious about the BDSM world and can handle the carnal scenes included, as the book contains multiple strong, highly detailed erotic scenes. I do happily recommend this book and look forward to continuing the series.
