Hidden Scars is a romance novel written by A.M. Myers. The novel is told in first POV of Emma Harrington, through a series of scenes that alternate between her traumatic past with her fiancé and the present, where Emma is trying to move on with her life. Emma feels like a shell of the girl she use to be and Hidden Scars follows her journey as she tries to live her life again.
Hidden Scars starts one year after Emma is finally able to leave her fiancé, Ryan Wheeler, who was both emotionally and physically abusive. While starting her new life, Emma’s family is her strongest support, especially her brothers, Trey and Tucker. As a way to move forward, Emma gets a tattoo from Phoenix “Nix” West, a family friend’s nephew. Emma immediately feels an instant connection with Nix, who is charming and caring, but her past experiences prevent her from being able to trust herself.
When Ryan starts to stalk and harass Emma, Nix and her brothers do everything they can to protect her. Emma and Nix begin to grow closer the more time they spend together, and Emma is slowly able to let down her guards to allow Nix in. As the threats become more intense, Emma fights not only for her life but for her heart.
I rated Hidden Scars 4 out of 4 stars. The emotional journey that the author was able to create for Emma felt so genuine, and the true damage that abuse inflicts on people is explored throughout the novel. The story is beautifully written and the flashbacks provide depth to the story without causing confusion to the main story line. I also rated the book four stars because it creates a relationship that feels real after what Emma has experienced. Along with a well developed story line and characters, the novel had few errors, which is another reason I gave the book four stars.
I would recommend Hidden Scars to fans of romance novels, who enjoy reading about characters that fight for their love. Not only is there a steamy love between Emma and Nix, but there is also action which helps the pace of the book. Fans of romance novels that have more to the story, will enjoy the journey this book creates. Hidden Scars is a very intense novel and readers should be warned of multiple triggers of emotional and physical abuse, including rape.
I really enjoyed reading Hidden Scars and following Emma’s journey to fight for her life. Often books overlook the depth of trauma that abuse leaves on a person, but this novel delves into how these scars effect an individual, even when the physical scars have healed. I liked the fast pace story line, developed characters, and steamy romance created throughout the book, and I was not able to put the book down.
