Watching from the Shadows by Samantha A Cole is the fifth book in the Trident Security Series. The series centers around a group of ex-military men who own their own security firm. This closely-knit group of six (formerly-single) men is down to two bachelors.

Marco Deangelis, a retired Navy Seal, has made it perfectly clear that he never intends to have a wife or children. After watching his mother overdose on the kitchen floor (leaving him to spend his teenage years raising his younger sister,) he never wants to become attached and definitely doesn’t want children. Unfortunately for him, one grief-stricken tryst after his sister’s funeral leads to complications down the road.

Harper Williams found Marco extremely attractive but never acted upon it knowing that a family wasn’t in his long term plans. So she isn’t surprised when he refuses to respond to her messages saying that she is expecting. It isn’t until Harper is viciously attacked in her home a year later that Marco comes barging back into her life shocked to find out that he is now a father.

Although Marco had never intended to become a father, he added some comic relief while trying to adapt to his new role. My favorite scene was when he had to look up how to change a baby’s diaper. Even though this book would fall under the erotic romance/BDSM theme, it also had action, mystery, and humor mixed throughout the story making it more enjoyable and unique to the category.

This novel kept me engaged and always coming back for more. I was never sure what to expect inside the bedroom or out. I felt like the characters were well-developed and reintroduced fluidly making it easier on readers who hadn’t read the first few novels in the series.

The characteristic that I liked best about this novel was the close-knit group of core guys. When trouble came knocking, the group of guys always had each other’s backs. With most romance novels today it seems that the core groups of main characters are women ultimately seeking a husband. But in this series I enjoyed the role-reversal of men finding love through their endeavors.

With that being said, this novel is intended for a mature audience due to some descriptive dominatrix scenes and strong language. Even with the adult content, I can’t speak more highly for this novel. I would recommend this novel to anyone who might enjoy the occasional kinky sex scene surrounded by non-stop action. Because of this, I would rate this novel a 4 out of 4 stars.

Thanks. I would suggest reading the books from the beginning of the series. I'm sure all of the other books will be just as flavorful as this one.
