Re: Anyone else get motion sick when reading in a car?

As I have gotten older, I have the same issue. I used to while away the hours on a road trip reading. Now, 10 minutes in and I have the headache and nausea. Even if I use a Kindle or try to play apps on my phone.

I haven't been able to find a way to fix it. Have been considering books on tape. I have never listened to one, so I'm not too sure about that. I prefer to feel the book, turn the pages, and read using the voice in my head and the pictures it creates. I'm afraid an audio book would throw off my personal experience with the book. Has anyone tried this?

I used to get awful motion sickness as a kid. It was so bad I had to take dramine just to ride the school bus. Taking dramamine in the car helped with the reading, but I could only read for so long even after taking the medicine. I find that doing it at night is way better than during the day. I don't like the heat, so there is something about combining heat, sun, and a car ride with reading that makes me ill.

ALL THE TIME. Regardless of whether I'm reading a physical copy or an ebook, I cannot concentrate on words when on a car ride in fear of throwing up. It's incredibly inconvenient and annoying, especially when I'm in for a long car drive.
My weekend is all booked!

Ever since I could read, I always carried books with me, even in the car. I didn't start getting sick until I was older. Now, I can't even look at a map on the phone for longer than a few minutes before getting sick.

I didn't used to, but now that I'm older I do a little bit. I have to keep looking up in order not to feel sick.

I can't even read 2 sentences in a car without feeling nauseous! I get so mad because when we go on trips I'd love to pass the travel time with reading but unfortunately the car sickness over rules that.

This is true for me too. There used to be a time when I was able to read in the bumpiest of roads and never feel nauseous, but I have noticed that as I have gotten older, and my eyesight worse, I can only read for about 5 minutes before I get sick. So maybe it has something to do with one's eyesight? It certainly is true in my case.

It doesn't bother me. I do know others thought that it bothers. Then there's my aunt who can't even turn her head back in a car without getting nausea never mind even reading.

I can't read a paper book in a car but I find I have no problem reading my Kindle Touch. It must be different for everyone.

luckily i don't. when i was a child my family would often go on holiday by car, driving several hours to our destination and i read a lot in the car back then or played game boy :) unless i'm in the mountains and there's lots of serpentine roads, then i get motion sick in the car as well.

I definitely get car sick, and it really sucks when you start getting that headache. For me, it helps to take the front seats in the car. They the back of a roller coaster is where it's the roughest, and the same goes for a car. Sitting in the middle row or passengers seat really helps me. If that doesn't work, I have to drink water and give myself a break.

I get motion sick in a car or any regular vehicle if I try to do snythng but look out the window. Luckily for me I have no issue reading on public transit buses or trains. I have a long commute on the bus and that's where I do most of my reading. It makes my commute sooooo enjoyable!

When I was a kid I was fine and always read in the car, but now I can barely look at my phone for a few minutes let alone read on my kindle without getting sick.

I feel sorry for people who get motion sickness from reading in a car. When I am on long road trips I would be so bored if I could not read. My husband, however, gets sick after reading something in the car for 10 seconds. Sometimes Dramamine can help, so try that out and see if you can read.

Yep, this is me! I can't read or look at a screen or basically do anything other than sleep or look out the window.
I wish I could read though - road trips would be so much fun, but at the same time, there is something really calming about just listening to the music and thinking about the world.
