Official Review: Frosted Cowboy by Charlene Ross
Frosted Cowboy is a romantic comedy about a 32-year old wedding dress designer Laney Delaney.
Laney is currently down on her luck. Disappointed romantically and professionally she sets to reinvent her life. While trying to establish her own business, she is also suited by three different men. Tom, an aspiring screenwriter/masseuse, is a self-proclaimed commitment-phobe. Jake, a bad boy with an on-again-off-again relationship, is temptation personified. Last but not least we have Mike. He is nice, a bit on the dull side and most importantly a safe choice. So what is a girl to do?
Funny, sassy, honest and real are the adjectives that best describe this book. The storyline is simple but catching. It is told in first-person and has a single POV. The author uses articulate and conversational writing. The story, in my opinion, is interrupted with unnecessary breaks between scenes that disrupt the reading flow.
Laney, the main character, is believable and likable. She is opinionated and honest. Throughout the story, we can see her personal growth and development. Sadly, for me, the main male characters were a bit lacking in that aspect but were still credible. I would also prefer if the author only focused on one male character. There are also a few intriguing side stories that take the focus away from the main one.
The biggest and most entertaining part of the book is a conversational and situational comedy. Laney and her broken brain to mouth filter in combination with her sarcastic streak a mile wide ensures that readers will find themselves laughing out loud. The author also very nicely depicts the bumpy road that is the struggle of starting your own business and finding genuine relationships. I found myself relating to several situations described in the book which made the reading all the more enjoyable. However, I did not like the emphasis the author made considering hypocrisy and malice. It gave the illusion that solidarity and honesty are hard to find. That may be true, but I still found it a bit irritating. I also did not like how the book ended. It felt rushed and unsatisfactory.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Perfect for readers who enjoy their romance with a side of sassiness, sarcasm, and intelligence. It is a well-written, fast-paced, highly entertaining read with a few minor drawbacks.
