So many romance novels and movies have a rather similar plot - two people meet, fall for each other, overcome issues and then finally get together and live happily ever after. The plot of Losing You by P j Haynie instead feels like a microscope, focusing on the trouble a relationship can have. The short book (less than 25 pages) tells the tale of Alexis as she sits in a bar, wallowing in her misery.

From her first person perspective, we come to learn just what happened between Alexis and Lucas a week ago. The two of them had been together for four years, and at first Alexis is guarded about revealing what it is she did to make him leave her, but makes it very clear it's her own fault. After sitting and wallowing for a bit, a random guy named John comes up and talks to her. While reluctant to talk, she ends up giving in and she reveals just what happened and why. John is far from a sympathetic ear, and yet he ends up being the best possible thing for her at that moment.

This was such a fantastic concept! Alexis, John, Kate (the bartender) and Lucas are all realistic characters and the story moves quickly, never wasting a moment. The story is easily relatable and it's impossible not to feel empathy for Alexis or Lucas especially. I also appreciated that the book had no sex, although it had a healthy dose of cussing (who wouldn't drop a few F-bombs while arguing?).

My biggest take-away of the book, however, is just how well the author drew me in. The writing style is fantastic with an exquisite manner of describing things and writing dialogue that always felt natural and true to the character. A good writing style goes far, and now I'm hoping P j Haynie writes lots more in the future.

Between the solid characters, great story and fantastic writing style, Losing You is easily worthy of 4 out of 4 stars. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has been in a relationship or to those who love a good romance story. The fact that it's so short (less than 25 pages) makes it something that's easy to devour in an hour or so. Coincidentally, that's exactly what you'll want to do the second you start on it, as putting it down is never an option!

great review. I don't like such short reads though. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
