International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Post by gali »

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the genocide of 6 million Jews, and countless other victims, by the Nazi regime during World War II. It is also the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. May Their Memories Be a Blessing!

What is grief, if not love persevering?

Grief is just love with no place to go.

This is...kind of a tough subject for me. My grandma, her sister, and their respective husbands were all survivors. They (understandably) never talked about it, even when I asked about it because of a school project. But I do know they lost a lot of siblings to...that event.

But even though they went through such a terrible thing, they still did okay, even if they were a bit odd by our standards. They lived together in a fairly small two story house, where both families had three kids. They had a chicken farm, and later a bungalow colony. I even spent the first year of my life in the latter. My grandpa died before my family moved to its current home, but I'm told he was a good man. The other three lived long lives. I'm not sure how old they were exactly, but they were well into their 80s and 90s.

And to the day they went, they were always willing to help out their children and grand children. They were more than willing to play host for dinners, where I still fondly remember eating nothing but Grandma's homemade chicken soup. Oh they could be stubborn as mules at times, but it was always for what they felt was the best reasons.
