How Sports shaped Politics?

Hello all!

So I'm dating a truly lovely man and he's really interested in soccer as a socio-political force. Problem is, I know nothing about soccer, let alone how it impacts communities and brings people together or breaks them apart. I feel like someone must have written an (ideally non-fiction) book about this, but I'm not even remotely qualified to find it. Does someone have a suggestion? You'd make me look like the smoothest girlfriend on the planet (and have my eternal gratitude).
