Children Story: How to Be a Good Big Sibling

Today’s the day; you’re not the baby anymore.
Soon another baby is going to come through the door.
It may make you happy or it may hurt your feelings,
but no matter what, today, you’re a big sibling.

So you need to learn what to do to help with the baby.
Will it be hard? No… possibly… maybe.
Don’t worry; this book will be your guide.
Soon, you will be the best sibling anyone will find!

When you meet the baby, the first thing you should do is introduce yourself.
Let them know you’ll protect and love them more than anyone else.
If you decide you want to touch, make sure you're gentle with them.
Babies are precious little things; you don’t want to hurt them!

So go ahead, don’t be meek.
Softly touch their hand or kiss their cheek.
Well that was easy or maybe it’s not.
Being a good big sibling is going to take more than just that!

The baby will cry and it’ll be pretty loud.
A good big sibling will make the baby smile.
If that doesn’t work, mommy and daddy will step in.
A good big sibling will find any way to help them.

Go help get a bottle or help pick up clothes.
Bring things to daddy or help wipe the baby’s nose.
If the baby gets cranky, you can sing to help them feel alright.
Hold their hand until they go to sleep and kiss them good night.

Well the day is over... for now at least.
Babies wake up when they want, even in the morning at three.
That’s not your problem, that’s for mommy and daddy to worry about.
After all you’ve just proved you’re the best sibling around!

Well that ends this guide, so take good care of the baby.
You two will get along just fine…possibly…maybe.

That was a fun poem to read. I had the mental image of the "sibling" being maybe four or five years old embarking upon this new and very important role as an older brother or sister. The narrator which is presented as a "guide" carefully instructs the older sibling in the duties they must now take on ending with the speculation that the two will get along just fine .... possibly ... maybe. I think that last sentence pretty much describes the feeling of the older sibling as "How do I really feel about this new kid on the block?" *LOL*

Very nice! Only one criticism ........ you should have posted this in the Creative Original Works: Poetry section. This is the Short Story section ....... shhhhhhhhhhhh .... I won't tell anyone *LOL* [;- )

It sounds like a poem because it rhymes (probably the way I formatted it too) but it's suppose to be like a children's picture book. I just don't have any pretty illustrations to go with it.

I thought it was really cute and I could see someone reading it to a child who was like 4-6 to get them ready for the new kiddo. I agree there should have been a few pictures here. I also agree that it should have been in the poetry section. Great work.

Yeah it seems like a poem, even though its a rhyming children's picture book. I tried to break it up as if each paragraph was a new page. Thank you for your feedback!

I can see this as a children's book. I was a bit confused as it didn't rhyme consistently, so not a poem, but rhymed every other line .. thank you for clearing that up.
I had a mental image of maybe a 10 year old guiding a 5 year old.
Especially the 'possibly ... maybe'
I hope you find an illustrator to match your story.

Nice words, suitable for children. In fact sometimes when a new born is welcomed in a home, the elderly children feel some sort of frustration and jealousy, these words would help them to adjust.

Well done! A children's picture book immediately came to mind while I was reading this. It's true that a young child can feel they are being "replaced" when a new baby comes along. Even the family dog can feel that way, too!
