For one, watching Sci-Fi shows you the visual representation of the tech, of the creatures/aliens, of space itself.
However, reading gives a much more detail orientated approach to the genre with things being done in written text which cannot be done through visual media.
So, I'd have to say reading takes it, but it's close.
