At sixty-six years old, Melanie Schulman believes that her chance for romance is over. Married to a man who barely looks at her anymore, Melanie’s life has become mundane. This changes, however, when Mark comes back into her life. Melanie and Mark graduated from high school together, and when they initially reconnect online she barely remembers him. Although Mark is also married, the two develop a quick rapport and a love affair soon begins.

Barbara J. Peters’ Never Too Old for Romance explores how relationships change over time. When the story begins, Melanie is very unsure of herself. She feels as though she is old and unattractive. This relationship leads Melanie to explore a side of herself that she no longer thought existed. As her relationship grows with Mark, Melanie gains a newfound confidence in herself. Those around her also begin to notice that she is not only more confident; she is radiant and looks younger than she did before.

Never Too Old for Romance is a romantic novel, and it is a quick read that is easily entertaining. The characters are likable despite their flaws. It is easy to empathize with Melanie, and to hope that she finds happiness. Although I have found that many romances have one-dimensional characters who are devoid of personality, this is not so in Peters’ novel. Never Too Old for Romance has all of the elements of your classic romance novel - detailed bedroom scenes, characters eating expensive meals, and jet-setting across the globe. The characters and their emotions, however, still feel authentic.

The characters in Never Too Old for Romance approach their complicated lives very much like adults. Although they make some mistakes along the way, they do not play childish games. There is an understanding that over time people do drift together, or drift apart. Although in many ways Melanie acts like a teenager, she does have a deep feeling of guilt over her infidelity. Throughout the novel she struggles with her desire for Mark and her feelings of loyalty towards the man that she married.

In all this novel was an enjoyable read. I think if you like romances, and maybe if you are tired of only reading about younger relationships, this is an interesting one to pick up. I give Never Too Old for Romance 3 out of 4 stars. This book does remind you that the dynamics of relationships can change over time, and even though you may think your chances for love are gone, there is still hope.

The title of this book is interesting, Never Too Old for Romance. It speaks to our humanity: the effects of the passage of time on our relationships, mind and body are always topical. For me, it is never too late for love, so this book is a must read.
