Never been on the sea myself. The closest I have been gone is the beach. I have a lot of respect for the sea though.

I enjoy being ON the sea (in a boat or such.) I enjoy walking along the beach and LISTENING to the sea. I do not enjoy going INTO the sea. Too many sharks and jellyfish and such. I'd rather swim in a pool where I can see the bottom.

Drowning does seem like an awful way to die.

I love the sea! I spent a lot of my childhood near the ocean, and I've always found it fascinating. If anything, I feel it's a shame that we don't treat the sea with more care and respect.

I also agree that people need to take better care of the sea.

I love looking at the sea and large bodies of water. However, I can't swim so I avoid going on the water whenever possible (via boat, kayaking, etc) or in water deeper than 5 ft. I have this fear of sinking and drowning or being attacked by some large water creature.

The worst sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach comes from swimming underwater, looking into the darkness in front of me, and not knowing what is out there.

I'm so sorry that happened to you!
When I was younger, I kept getting pulled by the strong current until I finally relaxed enough to safely exit the water. Even though I knew the more I panicked the worse it would become, it took me a while to calm down.
So, while I don't know exactly how you feel, I can relate on a small level.
I still love the ocean. Going to the beach is one of my favorite things to do. I just tend to be far more careful now, and less likely to go much further than waist deep water. I also watch my kids very closely, and make sure the little ones are always with an adult.

Of course, we need to be at least a little bit afraid of almost everything in nature. There's almost always another side to its beauty. There are many things about the sea that are objectively dangerous, so I believe that anyone who says they aren't afraid, is either not very aware of that, feels the risks are worthwhile, or thinks they are invincible. I usually think the risks are worthwhile, but that doesn't mean I don't have a healthy fear. I have a lot of friends who just genuinely think that nothing will ever happen to them. It gets on my nerves sometimes, but then I remember that when we're young, we are invincible until we're not. Meaning nothing bad has happened to them yet to make them feel otherwise, so for that, I am thankful.

Though I don't know how to swim, sea with its vastness, beauty and mystery really fascinates me. Thinking of sea fills me with passion rather than fear.

I do have an unhealthy fear of the sea because I always imagine all sorts of ugly sea creatures lurking in the deep.
