I won't argue that Leone has done some amazing work but you can't deny that Sam Pekinpah made great westerns.

They were both iconoclasts in the fact that they completely razed the traditional opinion of what a western should be to the ground. They finished what 'The Searchers' started and defined the 'modern' western. It's also interesting to see their total diferent approach to and rendering of violence. Sam Peckinpah was great in all genres. Crime (The Getaway), war (Cross of Iron), western (Wild Bunch, Patt Garrett and Billy the Kid), he mastered them all. One of my heroes for sure, even though he was an absolute asshole as a person.

Even tough my favored genre is horror, I honestly can never really get into horror movies. They always focus more on the effects and dramatics than the actual plot, not to mention that, often times, the screen writers are going for the "startle" effect rather than suspense and terror. I recall watching Halloween when I was nine, and it didn't scare me a bit. If anyone can direct me to a horror movie that actually provides proper horror, I would greatly appreciate it.(Two that have been suggested to me are The Exorcist and The Omen, but I probably will not want to watch the exorcist anytime soon considering that I want to read the book first.)
No... A lot and I mean A LOT focus more on the plot then the actual movie.

Halloween (1978) A low budget film that had NO BLOOD at all and made it to the big stream.

I dont have any one favorite movie but one of my favorites is Lifeforce. Its about the earth being invaded by vampires from outer space. I especially liked the cool soundtrack music by Henry Mancini.

I believe what Sophius is looking for is pure dread.. The Omen, The Exorcist aren't bad movies for that. In fact, they're among the best in that field, while providing a very decent to laudable plot. Others you might want to check are The Haunting, The Innocents, The Thing, Suspiria, Ringu, stuff like that. For me, personally, plot in horror isn't that important. Good horror hits you in your primeval side, your gut , and doesn't concern itself with the intellect. It goes in raw, unpolished and tries to pry in your subconscious. It's a great feeling when a horror achieves that, however terrifying it may be. God, I love horror.

Its been a long time since Ive seen a decent horror movie, most of the newer ones are too graphic and are poorly made. The Ring was a good one, and I saw one called House of Nine that was pretty good. I saw The Thing mentioned, that was a good one. I saw it when I was a kid and it scared the hell out of me. Another one that was good was one called Unknown Island with Richard Denning and Barton Mclane. I saw it when I was 12 years old and I had nightmares over it. I found it on dvd a couple years ago and it is still kind of frightening.

I love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, any Julia Roberts movie, some of the Jane Austen adaptations - the TV series more than the movies though...oh there are too many.
