Sadly, I read/skim more magazines than books.

I never buy magazines but my mother was in hospital recently so I had to buy some to keep her occupied & of course I scanned through them. Terrible waste of money IMO just full of advertising & air-brushed photos of wanna-be celebs.
I remember when magazines had short stories & books serialised & reviews and were worth the purchase price plus of course the recipies & knitting patterns.
My first introduction to Harold Robbins was in a mag my mother purchased with the shopping each week - I think it was 'Never Love a Stranger'.

I'd rather spend my hard earned EUR on a good book instead of a few pages of glossy mind-numbing rubbish.

My local newsagent has a vast array of magazines on every subject under the sun. If he hasn't got it, he can get it. From celebrity gossip to scientific journals, cars to cooking, hobbies to homeopathy and everything inbetween for all age groups.

I was interested in the comment above, re the cost of a magazine, and I'd have to say they are a fraction of the cost of a good book here, e.g. a magazine is approx AU$8.00 and a paperback is approx AU$32.00 (hardback extra) so maybe that's why there is still a strong market for them. I love the gorgeous glossy photos because when I was a kid I'd cut them out for school projects. And what about those free rock star posters for the back of your bedroom door...!!

Good topic! I used to read a lot more magazines a few years ago than i do now- mostly Empire film magazine or PSM3, a Playstation mag back when i was big into my consoles, but lately i read very few magazines, maybe the odd copy of Rte Guide or if im waiting in the dentist or doctor waiting area i will flick through whatever is there. Im after saving a lot of money since stopping the magazine habit.

About the only magazines I read are in dr offices. I get the AARP mag, it has some interesting articles in it. I used to subscribe to the Smithonian and Fantasy and Science Fiction mag but not much more than that.

Even though they can be expensive, there are still some mags I gladly delve into my wallet for. Subjects I look for are mainly history and sci-fi/horror/cult films. We ( in the Dutch-speaking area) have some pretty good ones for those.

Fran, try eFiction on your Kindle or online. Its full of short stories, poetry and book reviews, if that is what you are looking for in a mag.

Jacob, you can't actually believe that. There are plenty of good, useful, reputable magazines available. I personally subscribe to Everyday Food, eFiction Magaine and Parent's magazine, and they don't spread teenager celebrity, pointless gossip at all. Maximum PC is a great one for people inclined to the IT/IS profession. I agree that most magazines targeted at people your age do, but to condemn all mags is just wrong.
