Used books are so much cheaper, and it's so much more economical!

Both have their advantages. I do love fresh new books. But i also love old well read books for their charm.

I almost always read used books or books that my friends recommend and lend to me.

If it is a series I am collecting, or works by my favorite authors, or a classic, I will buy hardback new. Anything else I will buy paperback used.

I am a big fan of going to the paperback book exchange. When you read soooooooo much it can get expensive. The exchange is also great if you find an author that has several older books that you haven't read before. Since having my website, I have been buying more new books so that I can review them for the authors. Of course, lots of the authors have been kind enough to send me copies free.

I miss having access to a book exchange. They seem to have disappeared around here.

Yes Sleepy. We are fortunate. But I still have to drive 45 minutes to get to it. ONE advantage to living in a small town. :D

Both, but usually new. Always try to buy from the small local bookshop (use it or lose it), they can normally get in-print books in 2-3 days.

Both :) I really enjoy the hunt for something really old though. I like to shift and dig around antique stores, rummage sales, yard sales..I've even went to several estate sales (auctions) and picked up books...then I love going to bookstores getting some tea and just sitting down reading for awhile. :)

I buy both, but I prefer new. The reasons I buy used books are because (1.) they are cheaper and (2.) there are a lot of out-of-print and hard to find books in used collections that are just really difficult to get your hands on any other way. Frankly, I could do without the yellowing pages, broken spines and general poor condition and defacement, also known as "charm."

Like Ribaldo said, they both have their own good qualities. Used books are generally cheaper, but when looking for a certain author, sometimes it's hard to find them in used books. Plus, I love that feeling after buying a brand new book. :D

Novels, etc - always second hand. Paying 20c for a book is so much better than paying $20.
If there is a specific book I need (usually non-fiction) I will buy it new from Amazon.

New and used both have their ups and downs for me.

I agree with the nostalgia idea, but i love opening a brand new book for the first time as well.

I used to always buy new books, but now i only buy new copies of books by my favourite authors, or ones that are in the sale. Ive managed to pick up so many that i have wanted to read from charity shops recently.
