Maybe you are not suited for small towns. I suppose some people are more comfortable in the cities. It probably depends on your background, that sort of thing. I was born and raised mostly in small towns, We lived in Spokane, Wn. when I was in high school for a few years, thats a fair sized town, it was ok but when I was about 22 I moved to Utah and lived in nothing but small towns for almost 50 years. I even lived in a ghost town for a time and I loved it.

As a child I lived partly in a small town(village really) and the other part on the farm. My adult life has been spent mostly in major cities.

I miss the stars, the scent of rain, fresh cut grass and grapes in the hot humid air. We'd hike around the river all day, catch tadpoles in the stream, build dams, stay up late catching lightning bugs and dew worms. Hanging out high in the trees to catch to good breeze. We'd have sweat lodges, drumming circles, fires and forts and there was always someone strumming a guitar. I miss that life.

I don't know why anyone would enjoy living in a city. Too many people, all in a hurry. It makes people grumpy.

Sounds idyllic. I would miss that, too.

If I were rich I would work in the city and escape to the country on the weekend and holiday at the beach.

Good topic. Im a city man at heart, but only my home city! I have lived in Dublin for 2 years and found it to be a very cold and unsafe city plus its quite hard to make connections with people. There is no sense of community or connections plus i found the city quite dangerous at night. Thats just my own experience of it as i have friends who love and live in big cities. But here, i embrace the sense of community and knowing a lot of people here, which always helps. Probably a homebird at heart but o couldnt live in the country- although the peace and quiet is nice im too nosey a bugger to not know whats going on with those around me and the isolation would get to me.

I prefer big cities, since most of the things that we need can be found here and I you can do more things here. It may not be as relaxing just like in small town but I do really like to be in a city.

Honestly I like neighborhoods in big cities that make it feel like a small community. If not that then mid sized cities say, 75-150,000 people.

I grew up in a small town, but presently live in a big city.

I'd prefer to live in a small town, but like many of the things a big city has to offer.

Things I like about a small town:
it's quieter,
rents/house prices are more affordable,
being able to look up at the stars,
more freedom to be spontaneous,
and a lot more.

Things I don't like about small towns:
small town clap-trap (if you fart on one side of town, people on the other side of town usually already know about it before you've had time to even walk across town),
lack of career opportunities (the width and breadth of industry is usually limited. And if you can find a job, but don't get along with your boss or co-workers, you are trapped by a mortgage, etc. In a big city, you have more choice regarding jobs, AND if you don't like a company there are ten other options to choose from.),
the market simply isn't big enough to support many amenities I like (for example, airport, big library, museum, art gallery, live theatres, etc.).

Ideally, I'd like to work in a smallish-size town; with the sort of job that makes me happy; own enough acreage to have an orchard, gardens, greenhouse; and still close enough to a big city to get to the other amenities once in a while. For example, an international airport within a one or two hour drive would be nice. A Wendy's, Starbucks, etc is nice too. Just one or two--don't need fifty.

I like both as there are pros and cons every where, lets take the +ve ones and leave the _ve.
when speaking about the cities today's cities are yesterdays towns.
both are one and the same when there is a development in a town it grows to city. there may be few disadvantages in the city but we cant say that its not a better place for living.
Its we who have to modify, create or develop things, so the world is in over hands lets make it a better world.

I live in a small-ish town (6,000-7,000 in the city limits) and live about 35 minutes from the big city of Fort Worth. I like it as such because I don't have to deal with major traffic or tons of people but I can still jump in my car and go have some fun in the city if I want to. I work in Fort Worth as well.

No doubt for me... I can live only in big cities. I love the energy, traffic and crowd of the city. It just feels full of life compared to small towns.

I'm one of those people who likes to live in a small town just outside of a big city. Not that NZ really has "big cities" except for Auckland. Technically, I don't live in Christchurch but in a community/township a 10 minute drive out of Christchurch. Most people will just think of it as a suburb of Christchurch. In this community, there are lots of families and lots of people know each other and know what's going on with each other. I think where I live I have found the balance between city life and small town life :) Also my in-laws live in this same type of community just out of Auckland, it's nice and quiet there and a tight knit community but it isn't far to go if you want to get amongst the hustle and bustle of city life.

Hope I havent given away too much personal information there - no stalkers please

i live in a big city but i'd choose the live in a small town. here in the city, there is always noise, always cars, buses, ships and other things. it can also get especially noisy during events and national holidays that everyone needs to celebrate. the houses are basically stuck to each other yet sometimes you don't even know who your neighbor is. well, for me that is. the only neighbor i know who lives near my house is my cousin.

in the countryside, you can count the stars and you will never stop counting. the air is fresh too, and the temperature is always perfect for reading or rolling around in the grass and playing with your dog.
